This week’s settlement between Meta and U.S. states includes platform updates that align with APA’s health advisory recommendations.

Psychological research has documented how social media features can interfere with young people’s sleep, academic focus, and ability to disengage.

This outcome is a meaningful step, but platform changes will take years to implement.

APA remains committed to ensuring those changes reflect the best available science on youth development.

The Third Neurotransmitter in ADHD: What We're Learning About Serotonin

ADHD conversations usually focus on dopamine and norepinephrine. But serotonin plays a quiet, important role too.

Made in a brainstem hub called the dorsal raphe nucleus, serotonin projects out to the prefrontal cortex (impulse control), amygdala (emotional reactivity), hippocampus (memory), and the brain's reward circuitry. Along the way, it's synthesized, released, binds to receptors, then gets cleared by a transporter (SERT) or broken down by an enzyme (MAO). Each step is a place where things can look different in ADHD brains.

Serotonin and dopamine also have a push-pull relationship, meaning a shift in one system can ripple into the other. So attention, impulsivity, and emotional regulation may reflect an imbalance across multiple interacting systems, not just one.

The brain rarely runs on a single messenger. ADHD may be no exception.

Your brain's chemistry changes depending on where you look. New research highlights just how specialized different brain regions are when it comes to neurochemicals:

🔹 Dopamine: concentrated in the substantia nigra and cortex, key for movement and reward
🔹 GABA: the brain's "calm down" signal, spread across the cortex, cerebellum, and olfactory bulb
🔹 Serotonin: found mainly in the thalamus, pineal gland, and brainstem, influencing mood and sleep

This is precise biological architecture. And it means that future brain therapies (think: treatments for Parkinson's, depression, epilepsy) can't take a one-size-fits-all approach. Scientists are now developing nanoscale sensors and modulators smart enough to target these specific regions with pinpoint accuracy.

The more we understand where these chemicals live, the closer we get to truly personalized neuro-medicine.

Serotonin (5-HT) and alcohol interact in brain circuits controlling reward, mood, stress, and impulse control, particularly the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, hippocampus, and nucleus accumbens.

Low or disrupted serotonin signaling may increase vulnerability to alcohol use. Alcohol-preferring models show reduced 5-HT signaling and altered prefrontal 5-HT2A function, potentially weakening emotional regulation and behavioral control.

At the same time, chronic alcohol exposure further disrupts serotonergic signaling, affecting receptors such as 5-HT1A, 5-HT2A, 5-HT2C, and 5-HT3. During withdrawal, these changes may contribute to anxiety, negative mood, craving, and relapse. And If you're really interested in reading and learning more, find link in the bio.
