💡Why Early Speech and Language Therapy Matters After Stroke
I recently evaluated a patient who was one year post CVA and had not received speech and language therapy prior to assessment.
On initial evaluation, the patient presented with Broca’s aphasia, with relatively preserved comprehension and absence of meaningful verbal output.
The delay in intervention was primarily due to limited awareness among caregivers regarding the role and importance of speech therapy in post-stroke rehabilitation.
Following the initiation of structured speech therapy, the patient showed noticeable improvement within few days, progressing to single-word verbal output with gradual improvement in functional communication🥰.
While this progress is encouraging, it also highlights an important reality-
🧠 The brain’s recovery potential is highest during the early (critical) period after stroke.
Had speech therapy been initiated during this early phase, the patient’s communication outcomes would likely have been significantly better.
💡 This case underscores the importance of:
-Early referral for speech and language therapy
-Caregiver education and awareness
-Multidisciplinary stroke rehabilitation
Early intervention is essential to optimize communication outcomes and improve overall quality of life following stroke.
