Eales’ Disease
Eales’ disease is an uncommon retinal vascular disorder that mainly affects young adults. It is characterized by inflammation of the peripheral retinal veins (retinal periphlebitis), which can lead to retinal hemorrhages, vascular occlusion, ischemia, and the development of abnormal new blood vessels. Although the exact cause remains unclear, it has been associated with hypersensitivity to tuberculosis proteins in some patients.
Patients may experience symptoms such as floaters, blurred vision, sudden painless vision loss, or recurrent vitreous hemorrhage. Fundus examination often reveals perivascular sheathing, retinal hemorrhages, venous congestion, and areas of retinal non-perfusion.
Early detection and appropriate management are crucial to prevent sight-threatening complications. Treatment may include corticosteroids to control inflammation, laser photocoagulation for ischemic retina, anti-VEGF therapy, and vitrectomy in advanced cases with persistent vitreous hemorrhage. Regular retinal monitoring helps preserve vision and reduce the risk of recurrence.
👁️ Protecting retinal health through early diagnosis and timely treatment can make a significant difference in visual outcomes.
