Requesting by Indicating: Developing Functional Communication

Teaching a child to indicate or point to desired objects provides a functional and meaningful way to communicate their needs.

As children learn an appropriate way to request, reliance on behaviors such as screaming, scratching, or crying to communicate wants may be reduced.

The ultimate goal is to help the child communicate their needs clearly, independently, and consistently across settings.

When a child has difficulty producing certain sounds correctly, an articulation assessment can help identify the specific speech-sound difficulties they are experiencing.

🔎 What is the TAPU Assessment?
TAPU is used as part of speech-language assessment to evaluate a child’s articulation and speech-sound production. It helps the Speech-Language Therapist observe how a child produces different sounds and identify sounds that may be difficult, substituted, omitted, or distorted.

Why is it important?
Identifying specific articulation difficulties helps the therapist develop a more individualized and targeted intervention plan. Early identification and appropriate therapy can support clearer speech and more confident communication.

At 7 Senses CDC, our Speech-Language Therapy team focuses on understanding each child's individual communication needs and providing structured, child-centered support.
