Most of the drugs currently used in solid form (tablets, granules) contain crystalline chemicals, which are poorly soluble in water and the human body, and therefore characterized by low bioavailability and absorption of the drug. One of the methods to increase the solubility of drugs is to use an amorphous form, which is more water-soluble and thus can achieve higher bioavailability. Better bioav
ailability allows to achieve the same therapeutic effect at lower dosage - a smaller amount of active substance in amorphous form may have the same therapeutic effect as a larger but crystalline dose of the same substance. Thus, drugs in a stable amorphous form may have better features like lower doses, which means an improvement in therapy for patients (e.g. smaller tablet, less side effects on the gastrointestinal tract), no need to use with food, less frequent dosing, and additionally less negative impact on the environment. The disadvantage of amorphous forms of chemical substances and one of the reasons for their still very rare use in the production of medicines is their low physical stability - amorphous substances tend to easily recrystallize and lose the mentioned better properties.
