Solo parenting: day 4 of 4 🫠🤍

And before anything else — the biggest salute to single parents who do this everyday. The mental load alone 😮‍💨👏🏼

There has been zero downtime. Between Ross having two naps, Bobby having one (naturally none of them align 😂), meals, snacks, nappies, entertaining everyone and Bobby currently sleeping in my bed… someone needs me approximately 24/7

But this weekend I’ve also noticed something lovely — the boys are starting to properly play together 🥹 They’re making each other laugh, entertaining each other and I’m getting little glimpses of the friendship that’s coming

It’s relentless and exhausting and somehow really lovely all at the same time

Two things can be true: you can absolutely adore this season and still find it really bloody hard 🤍

Before you buy another probiotic… SAVE THIS 🦠👇🏼

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that there’s one “best” probiotic

There isn’t!

Probiotic effects can be strain-specific, meaning different strains have been studied for different purposes

💊 After antibiotics? Certain strains such as Saccharomyces boulardii and LGG have evidence for reducing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea

🎈 IBS/bloating? B. longum 35624 has been studied for certain IBS symptoms

🚽 Constipation? Some B. lactis strains, including BB-12 and HN019, have been studied for bowel regularity

🧠 Stress/gut-brain axis? There’s interesting emerging research around strains such as B. longum 1714 — but I wouldn’t use probiotics as a treatment for stress or anxiety

And if you’re simply looking to improve your general gut health? You might not need a probiotic at all

Start with the basics: 🌱 30+ different plant foods a week, adequate fibre, fermented foods if tolerated, movement and sleep

And remember:

More strains ≠ better.
Higher CFU ≠ better.
The specific STRAIN + WHY you’re taking it matters.

📌 SAVE this for the next time you’re standing in front of the probiotic shelf or send it to someone who takes a probiotic!

Ireland’s first Longevity Retreat 🧬✨

I’ve just spent the last 24 hours with Longevity Retreat at The Reserve at Killashee — exploring what “longevity” actually means beyond the buzzword 🐝

Because longevity isn’t simply about living longer .. it’s about increasing our healthspan: the number of years we spend living well, feeling strong, healthy and independent 🫶🏻

Across the retreat we explored everything from movement, nutrition and metabolic health to sleep, stress, human connection and the role emerging technology may play in preventative health

There were clinical assessments, personalised longevity insights, yoga, hydrotherapy and a treatment suite featuring everything from LED light therapy and cryotherapy to hyperbaric oxygen and BTL technology — alongside some brilliant conversations around the science of ageing and the lifestyle factors we can actually influence

One of my biggest takeaways? The foundations are still the foundations
Move your body. Build and maintain muscle. Eat well. Prioritise sleep. Manage stress. Stay connected to people. And look after your health before something goes wrong

There’s so much noise (and marketing!) in the longevity space right now, so I’m excited to share more about what has good evidence behind it, what’s promising, and what we probably don’t all need to be doing just yet 🧬

A really fascinating two days — and lots to unpack! 🤍

Wellness Trend #1: Berberine 🌿

You’ve probably seen berberine all over social media, often labelled as “nature’s Ozempic”… but is the hype backed by evidence?

As a pharmacist, here’s my take 👇

✔️ Berberine is a plant compound that has been studied for its effects on blood sugar, cholesterol and insulin sensitivity.

✔️ Some research suggests it may be helpful for people with type 2 diabetes or certain metabolic conditions, but it’s not a magic weight-loss supplement and it’s certainly not a substitute for prescribed medication.

⚠️ It can interact with a number of medicines, including some used for diabetes, blood pressure and blood thinning, and it may cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhoea or stomach cramps.

⚠️ It’s also not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and because supplements aren’t regulated in the same way as medicines, quality and dosage can vary significantly between brands.

My advice? Don’t buy into wellness trends based on a 30-second influencer clip. A supplement that works for one person isn’t necessarily safe or appropriate for another 🤷🏼‍♀️

As always, focus on the basics first: balanced nutrition, regular movement, good sleep and evidence-based healthcare 💛

Have you tried berberine, or is it sitting in your online basket? 👇

The mental load of motherhood isn’t something you can see.

It’s not just the sleepless nights.

It’s never really switching off.

Even when you’re out for coffee.
Even when you’re trying to work.
Even when you’re finally sitting down after bedtime.

Part of your heart is always somewhere else.

And this week, with Ross being sick, it’s reminded me how quickly everything else becomes unimportant. The to-do list can wait.

It’s exhausting… but it’s also one of the greatest privileges to be someone’s comfort.

If this resonates with you, just know you’re not the only one carrying that invisible mental load 🤍
You’re doing great mamas 💖
