During times of grief, uncertainty, worry, and even in celebration or gratitude or joy, ritual saves me because all I can do is what is in front of me. A step, a process, a moment. Paso a paso. One step at a time is exactly what it means. Ritual is the science behind faith. Return to ritual when we overwhelm ourselves.

What I’m learning about being omo Eleggua are incredible patience and faith, virtues that don’t come easy at all to a person with child-like energy. Ask a child to wait patiently on their birthday when they see their presents behind the door. Ufff faith and patience.

Baba is the key holder to EVERY door, not just the ones you want to walk through. I’ve been coming up against so many locked doors, wearing on my patience and faith. But when I think about what is in store for me, the presents behind the door, I know I will already have the key and the door will open. Not every path that’s available to you is one you should take, and not every door that is open is yours. He is a key master.he asks YOU what key he should design that aligns with your Orí. With incredible patience and faith in myself and my destiny, the door will open.

I am grateful for every door I have walked through on this journey, and for all I have yet to encounter. Divine protection, divine love.

Emcee, performer, comedian, teaching artist, space-creator, and Southside Legend, Lawrence Binkey Tolefree, has been gracing Chicago with his talents for years, and recently spent 4 years in Thailand embracing global community and radical love in the form of healing and the liberated self. Binkey has been hosting "Art Therapy" at his space and inviting artists to release, share, and heal. As an advocate therapy, in the Black community specifically, we are going to chat about the many ways that can happen, and how artists can heal themselves.
