Should You Only See Your Chiropractor When You’re in Pain?

What one of the best chiropractic studies found about preventative care:

Most people fall into one of two groups:

They only come in when they’re hurting.
OR
They come in regularly to help prevent flare-ups.

So which approach is better?? 👇🏼👇🏼

✨A randomized clinical trial followed patients with recurrent low back pain for one year.✨

One group received chiropractic care only when symptoms returned. The other received scheduled preventative (“maintenance”) care.

✨Patients receiving scheduled care (preventative visits) experienced FEWER DAYS with bothersome low back pain throughout the year.✨

But not everyone benefited equally:

✅Patients whose pain regularly interfered with daily life experienced the GREATEST benefit.
✅Patients who generally stayed active but had recurring flare-ups also benefited.
❌ One group showed little to no additional benefit from scheduled care.

The researchers noticed that the group who didn’t benefit tended to report:
• Lower social support
• More interpersonal stress
• More challenges beyond the physical side of pain

Pain is more than muscles and joints!

The study suggests that scheduled chiropractic care isn’t for everyone… but it may be valuable for many people with recurring pain.

The goal isn’t simply to relieve symptoms.

It’s to reduce the number of days pain interferes with your life.

Pain is rarely JUST physical.

Recovery can be influenced by:
✓ Sleep
✓ Stress
✓ Physical activity
✓ Work demands
✓ Relationships
✓ Overall lifestyle

That’s why healthcare shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.

Some people do well with symptom-based care while others benefit from a more proactive strategy.

The best treatment plan is one that’s tailored to the individual- not the diagnosis alone.

We’ve all done it. 😅

“It only hurts when I do this…” proceeds to demonstrate the most awkward, oddly specific movement you’ve ever seen. 😂

My first thought? “Okay… don’t do that.” But all jokes aside, no demonstration is too silly. I’m always listening because those oddly specific movements often point us toward the real problem.

The goal isn’t just avoiding the movement- it’s finding the cause so you don’t have to think twice about it anymore.

Should you only see your chiropractor when you’re in pain? Or do preventive visits really make a difference?

Research suggests that for some people with CHRONIC REOCCURRING LOW BACK PAIN, staying ahead of flare-ups may mean fewer painful days.

But healthcare and treatment plans aren’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Watch the video to see which groups of people in the study benefited from “maintenance” chiropractic visits the most.

Which type of patient are you- do you wait until you’re in pain, or do you prefer to stay ahead of flare-ups? Tell me why in the comments. 👇

You didn’t throw your back out by lifting something heavy. That was the last straw. your body wasn’t prepared for the demand.

The heavy box. The awkward twist. Tying your shoe. Picking something up off the floor.

These are often blamed as the “cause” of a back injury… but many times they’re just the final straw.

I see patients who throw their back out once or twice a year and end up repeating the same cycle:

Pain → rest → anti-inflammatories → muscle relaxers → injections → wait until it calms down.

And then they hope it doesn’t happen again.

Sometimes a single adjustment can provide relief and help you get moving again- and there’s value in helping someone out of pain. But if the only goal is to calm symptoms, the pattern often repeats.

The bigger question is: why did your body struggle with that demand in the first place?

Long-term improvement comes from RESTORING FUNCTION and BUILDING RESILIENCE through a combination of appropriate chiropractic care, movement, strength, stability, and exercises that help your body handle the things you actually do in life.

The goal ISN’T TO AVOID lifting, bending, twisting, or living.

The goal is to build a body that can handle it 🙌🏼

Don’t wait for the next flare-up to force you to pay attention.

From someone who constantly cracked her own neck and back as a kid to a chiropractor who now does it professionally- here’s what parents should know if their child is always self-adjusting.

Twisting or popping the back isn’t necessarily harmful when it’s done occasionally and gently. But when it’s happening repeatedly throughout the day, it can be a sign of poor posture, muscle imbalances, joint restrictions, lack of movement, or repetitive stress from sports and daily activities.

Just because you hear a “pop” doesn’t mean anything was corrected. In fact, self-adjusting often causes the joints that already move well to cavitate, while the restricted joint- the one that may need the most attention- doesn’t move at all.

From personal experience and years in practice, one of the most common things I hear after a proper chiropractic adjustment is, “I don’t feel like I need to crack my back anymore.” Restoring normal joint motion often reduces the urge to constantly self-adjust.

If your child or teen is always twisting, stretching, or trying to crack their back, it may be time for an evaluation to identify the underlying cause.

We care for patients of all ages, including children and teens. Contact BodyMind Chiropractic & Wellness to schedule an evaluation ☎️ ✍️ (787) 363-5860

Every day, patients seem surprised that chiropractic care is actually helping them.

Not because improvement is rare.

Because many people were taught not to expect it.

Before they even walk through the door, many have absorbed years of messaging like:

“Chiropractic doesn’t work.”
“It’s pseudoscience.”
“It’s temporary.”
“It’s just cracking backs.”
“It’s dangerous.”

So they arrive skeptical.

Many people walk in the office thinking:
• “I’ll probably just have to live with this.”
• “Pain is normal as I get older.”
• “Nothing has helped before.”
• “My body is just broken.”

Then their headaches improve.
Their jaw relaxes.
Their neck moves freely again.
Their body feels different.

They get back to the activities they enjoy 🙌🏼

And they’re genuinely surprised.

Especially with chronic issues like TMJ, headaches, neck tension, and stress-related pain, many patients have already tried everything else first.

So when chiropractic helps, it doesn’t just change symptoms.

It changes what people believe is possible for their health.

And sometimes, that’s the most powerful shift of all.

✨Has chiropractic care ever helped you in a way you didn’t expect? Comment below- I’d love to hear your experience✨
