Wepa!!!! Saludos!!! Today we present modified dorsal blocking splints for the PIP joints due to Swan neck deformity for a 13 y/o patient. 🤙🏽🔥✅

For this patient, we fabricated modified dorsal blocking splints for the 3rd and 4th digits bilaterally to help control PIP joint hyperextension while still allowing functional use of her hands.

She has tried multiple splints over the past several years, but reports that these custom splints have significantly improved her ability to make a fist while preventing unwanted PIP hyperextension. 🙌🏼

🔹 Wear schedule: Full-time use
🔹 Splints are removed for prescribed exercises
🔹 Designed to limit PIP hyperextension while allowing functional finger flexion
🔹 Individually fabricated and adjusted for each hand

Sometimes a small modification can make a BIG difference in hand function. 💪🏼🖐️

🖐🏽 Bilateral Thumb CMC Osteoarthritis & SOS Splinting

Thumb CMC osteoarthritis can make everyday activities such as gripping, pinching, opening containers, cooking, writing, or using your phone painful and difficult.

A SOS (Short Opponens Splint) can provide support and stability to the CMC joint while allowing functional use of the hand during daily activities.

Benefits may include:

• Supporting and stabilizing the thumb CMC joint
• Decreasing stress on the arthritic joint during functional tasks
• Helping reduce pain with gripping and pinching
• Improving comfort during ADLs and work activities
• Allowing continued use of the hand while protecting the joint

These custom bilateral SOS splints were fabricated by our Occupational Therapist / Physical Therapist Assistant, Almarys Molina, specifically to provide support during the patient’s daily activities. 🙌🏽

Small splints. Big purpose. 🖐🏼

Following a silicone PIP joint arthroplasty, protecting the surgical repair while allowing appropriate healing is essential.

In this video, we’re fabricating a custom digital gutter splint designed to maintain proper alignment, protect the reconstructed joint, and support the patient’s rehabilitation during the early phases of recovery.

This splint is not intended to completely immobilize the finger throughout rehabilitation. It is removed at prescribed times so the patient can perform guided range of motion exercises as directed by the treating therapist and surgeon before being reapplied. This approach helps protect the surgical reconstruction while minimizing stiffness and promoting functional recovery.

Every orthosis is individually fabricated and customized based on the patient’s anatomy, surgical procedure, and the surgeon’s postoperative protocol. There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to hand rehabilitation.

At Puerto Rico Hand and Sports Rehab, we combine evidence-based rehabilitation with custom orthotic fabrication to help our patients recover motion, function, and confidence after hand surgery.

Hay momentos que solo los que trabajamos en terapia de mano y terapia ortopédica entendemos. 💙😂🔥✊🏽

Ver regresar a un paciente bebé porque simplemente… ¡ha crecido! 🥹 Hoy nos tocó hacer un nuevo ajuste de su férula para el pulgar, y no puedo evitar sentir una enorme satisfacción al ver cómo ese pequeño ha avanzado. 🔥❤️🙏🤙🏽

No hay mejor recompensa que ver que una férula personalizada cumplió su propósito: apoyar el desarrollo, proteger la función y acompañar el crecimiento de ese niño durante una etapa tan importante de su vida. ✊🏽✊🏽

Cada ajuste nos recuerda que el tiempo ha pasado, que el niño sigue creciendo y que, de alguna manera, fuimos parte de ese proceso. Ese es uno de los privilegios más grandes de trabajar en terapia de mano y terapia ortopédica.

Gracias a todas las familias que confían en nosotros para acompañar el desarrollo y la recuperación de sus hijos. Esa confianza significa muchísimo para todo nuestro equipo. 🙏🙏🙏

Quiero expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento al Colegio de Terapistas Ocupacionales de Puerto Rico por la invitación y la confianza para presentar el tema “El Rol de la Terapia Ocupacional en la Rehabilitación Ortopédica de la Extremidad Superior.”

Fue un verdadero honor poder compartir conocimientos, experiencias clínicas y mi pasión por una profesión que continúa transformando vidas todos los días. Espero haber aportado herramientas que sigan fortaleciendo nuestra práctica y, sobre todo, el cuidado que brindamos a nuestros pacientes.

También quiero agradecer profundamente a todo mi equipo de Puerto Rico Hand & Sports Rehab. Estas presentaciones no se logran solo. Mañana, 27 de junio, tendré el honor de presentar en la Convención de Terapia Ocupacional de Puerto Rico la conferencia:

“El Rol de la Terapia Ocupacional en la Rehabilitación Ortopédica de la Extremidad Superior.”

Quiero expresar mi más sincero agradecimiento a los organizadores por la confianza y la oportunidad de compartir conocimientos, experiencia clínica y mi pasión por la rehabilitación de la extremidad superior con tantos colegas de nuestra profesión.
También quiero darle las gracias a mi equipo de Puerto Rico Hand and Sports Rehab por su apoyo y ayuda en la preparación de esta presentación. Su compromiso y colaboración han sido fundamentales para poder llegar a este momento.
