I used to finish almost every surf session with lower back pain.

And for a long time, I thought the solution was simple: stretch more, release the tight muscles and hope it would go away.

It didn’t.

What finally changed things was understanding that my back pain wasn’t just a “back problem”.

I needed to build more capacity, move better and understand what my body was actually doing while surfing.

I started by:

🏋🏼‍♂️ Building strength instead of constantly chasing the pain.

🏄🏼‍♂️ Improving my paddling technique and learning which muscles should actually be doing the work.

🧠 Understanding that pain is influenced by much more than tissues: stress, sleep, recovery, nutrition and the nervous system all play a role.

🌿 Taking care of my health as a whole instead of looking for one magic exercise or treatment.

🌊 And, most importantly, learning to trust my body again.

The goal wasn’t to have a “perfect” back.

The goal was to build a body that could handle surfing.

And that’s when I started enjoying surfing more than ever.

If you’re a surfer who keeps getting back pain after surfing, don’t just keep stretching and hoping it disappears.

There might be a bigger picture to understand.

Pain isn’t always proportional to what’s happening on an MRI. Recovery is influenced by biomechanics, physical capacity, sleep, stress, smoking, nutrition, alcohol, and other lifestyle factors. Strength training is one piece of the puzzle, but rarely the whole puzzle. If you want lasting results, you need to treat the person, not just the disc.

Comment “SHOULDER” to contact you and help you find out the root of your shoulder pain.

Your shoulders weren’t designed to go from 8 hours at a desk to 3 hours of repetitive paddling without preparation.

Shoulder pain isn’t just “part of surfing.” In most cases, it’s your body telling you that something isn’t working efficiently.

One of the biggest mistakes I see in surfers is focusing only on surfing to become a better surfer. But if you never prepare your body for the demands of paddling, eventually your body will find a way to compensate.

Your shoulder doesn’t work in isolation. Every paddle stroke depends on good thoracic mobility, proper scapular control, rotator cuff strength, and efficient movement patterns. When one of these pieces is missing, the load is transferred somewhere else—usually the front of the shoulder or the neck.

That’s why stretching alone isn’t enough. You need mobility where you’re stiff, strength where you’re weak, and control through the full range of motion.

The better you understand how your shoulder is supposed to move, the better you’ll be able to prevent pain, paddle longer, recover faster, and spend more time doing what you actually love: surfing.

Surf more. Hurt less. Your training shouldn’t stop when you leave the water. 🌊

Surfing is usually not the problem. It’s the place where your body shows you that something is missing.

A painful shoulder often comes from a combination of:

🏋🏽‍♂️ Weakness and poor load capacity

Especially in the rotator cuff, lower trapezius, serratus anterior and the muscles that control your shoulder blade. If these muscles don’t do their job, other structures get overloaded.

🧍🏽‍♂️ Posture and an anterior shoulder position

Spending hours with rounded shoulders can change how your humeral head moves. Less space, less control, more stress during paddling.

🏄🏽‍♂️ Paddling technique

Poor scapular movement, overusing the front of the shoulder, or not engaging your back muscles can turn every wave into thousands of repetitive stress cycles.

🪽 Your shoulder blade is the foundation

The shoulder doesn’t work alone. Your scapula needs to move, rotate and stabilise correctly to create a strong and efficient shoulder.

The goal isn’t to stop surfing.
The goal is to build a body that can handle surfing.

Train the movement. Improve the control. Stay in the water 🤙🏽
