How an old school hobby taught me more than i expected
Knitting has become more than just a hobby for me
I started knitting about 18 months ago .. after visiting the in-laws and watching an expert in action my mother in law ..
for some reason i just had the urge to start it myself and i can't believe how much i love it ..
Of course, getting started there was a lot of mistakes, frustrations , swearing and starting again , but that is exactly how it should be when you are learning a new skill-
It’s a process,, taking it slow, learning from mistakes
I'm still a novice and every time i upgrade to a new project, the process is the same , as i learn new techniques, try new patterns and develop my skill
It's a fantastic way to be mindful, totally focused on a specific task , that is repetitive and rhythmic and so easy to get engaged in. .. getting in that flow state
I also love making things for my friends and they seem to love receiving
For me knitting is even more than this ..
It is calming - after a busy day , you can just get absorbed in a project , letting go of the any little annoyances and lifting my mood
it is creative - followed by a sense of achievement when you finally finish an item
it improves focus and attention - something that is being lost in times of so many distractions and declining attention spans
It's social - sharing projects , tips and support in my 'knit happens' group
You can pretty much do it anywhere ... like all things that help us be more in the present moment ... whether it is enjoying dinner without the distraction of phones or TV, a walk where you actually notice your own environment, running , swimming, playing guitar , cooking, writing ..
There are so many simple ways we can bring creativity , focus , calm and pleasure into busy lives
