BEATING THE HEAT ☀️🥣

Science Spotlight: Bicarb Testing with Elite Rowers 🥣

British Sports Nutrition company, FLYCARB, recently visited Redgrave Pinsent Rowing Lake for a day of sodium bicarbonate (bicarb) testing, education and race-day strategising with elite British rowers 📝

As Gaz Turner, Performance Science Lead at British Rowing, explains, bicarb can offer a significant marginal gain when layered on top of the fundamentals: training, good nutrition and smart race preparation.

Bicarb works by helping buffer acidity during high-intensity efforts, making it especially relevant for events like rowing, where athletes are racing at a very high intensity 🥣

The aim of the session was to help athletes move beyond generic timing protocols and better understand their own individual bicarb response.

The athletes used Mango BICARRB, certified by Informed Sport, with periodic blood testing used to track bicarb levels over time and identify each athlete’s “time to peak”.

That data helped answer two key questions:
🥣 How does each athlete respond to bicarb?
📈 When are their bicarb levels likely to peak?

At the highest level, those details matter. Race-day fuelling is not just about what you take, but when you take it.

We also discussed practical strategies for using BICARRB across multi-day regattas and competitions involving multiple high-intensity races, where repeatability, timing and gut comfort all matter!

Tuffin Triumphs | 3:54.06 Mile 📈

Joe Tuffin stormed to victory at the BMC Belfast Mile, winning by over three seconds in a huge 3:54.06.

That performance sends him straight to the top of the FLYCARB rankings, taking one tenth off our previous mile record 🥣 And makes him the fastest ever at a BMC meet

The Tuffin Train was in full flow today. A proper juggernaut performance, and a very exciting sign of what could be to come in 2026 ♥️🖤

先週末、飯澤千翔選手がSEIKOゴールデングランプリの1500mで3分37秒69を記録し、優勝しました。力強いラスト1周で集団を突き放す、圧巻の走りでした。
この勝利は、飯澤選手が素晴らしいレースコンディションにあることを示すものでした。そして今、その視線は2021年に河村一輝選手が樹立した日本記録、3分35秒42へと向けられています。

Kazuto Iizawa took victory over 1500m at the SEIKO Golden Grand Prix, running 3:37.69 with a powerful last-lap kick.

Now his eyes turn to the Japanese record of 3:35.42, set by Kazuki Kawamura in 2021.
