As a Ukrainian psychologist, I have been rather busy in the past 17 days.
Besides helping my fellow Ukrainians, I receive lots of requests from people who are helping Ukrainian refugees.
How do I talk to them?
Why are they upset?
They’ve been through a lot, how can I help them?
They seem to be angry – why?
Volunteering and helping others can be a dreadful job.
As a psychologist and a therapist, I have years of training, colleagues who support me, teachers who are there for me, weekly therapy, and supervision.
Helping others can be overwhelming. And if you found yourself being frustrated and irritated while helping others you might be heading to burnout.
Putting your own oxygen mask first does not show a lack of love or care for others. If you run out of oxygen, you can’t help anyone else with their oxygen masks anyway. So you gotta help yourself too.
