Today is कृष्ण जन्माष्टमी (Kṛṣṇa Janmāṣṭamī), the birthday of Kṛṣṇa (Krishna), whose name means “dark” or “dark blue.”
Kṛṣṇa is an incarnation of Viṣṇu, the deity who upholds the universe.
Many of his teachings come from the Bhagavad Gītā, tThe “bible of yoga” as known as “Song of the Lord”,
where Kṛṣṇa shares wisdom with Arjuna on yoga, karma, dharma, devotion, and liberation.
This verse from chapter 4 speaks to how true knowledge grows through yoga practice:
“Nothing purifies like divine knowledge. In time, the one who steadies the mind through yoga finds that knowledge within the Self.”
न हि ज्ञानेन सदृशं पवित्रमिह विद्यते ।
तत्स्वयं योगसंसिद्ध: कालेनात्मनि विन्दति ॥
Na hi jñānena sadṛśaṃ pavitramiha vidyate
tatsvayaṃ yogasaṃsiddhaḥ kālenātmani vindati;
BG 4.38
The message is that these texts can’t be fully understood through reading alone, they ask to be lived.
The more your practice deepens, the more their meaning opens up, revealing itself as your perception becomes clearer.
Knowledge (vidyā) is the path to liberation from suffering, and throughout the Gītā, Kṛṣṇa shows how yoga leads us beyond it.
Wishing everyone a happy Kṛṣṇa Janmāṣṭamī 🕉️
