PRE-SALE OF FREITAS-MAGALHÃES’ NEW BOOK WHAT THE FACE DOESN’T SAY NOW AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE

The pre-sale of What the Face Doesn’t Say — The Limits of the Science of Emotion, the new book by A. Freitas-Magalhães, Ph.D., is now available worldwide on Kobo Books, in English and Portuguese editions.

The new work addresses one of the most challenging questions in contemporary emotion science: how far can science legitimately go when interpreting the human face?

After decades dedicated to studying what the face can reveal about the brain and emotion, Freitas-Magalhães turns the question around. Rather than focusing exclusively on what can be observed, measured and coded, the book investigates the boundaries between facial signal, scientific evidence and inference.

Its central principle is expressed in a concise statement: “The face provides evidence. It does not provide omniscience.”

Throughout the book, Freitas-Magalhães examines the relationship between the brain, face and emotion through the Facial Brain Theory, Survival Triangle Theory, Face-Mirror Theory, Neurocultural Theory, Neuromicroexpressions and F-M FACS 6.0 — The Facial Brain Coding System.

The work argues that increasing precision in facial measurement must not be confused with certainty about a person’s internal experience. A facial movement can be detected and coded, but this does not automatically establish its psychological cause, intention or meaning. In the same way, the absence of visible facial evidence cannot automatically be interpreted as the absence of emotion.

This distinction becomes particularly important in the age of Artificial Intelligence, when increasingly powerful systems can detect, compare and classify subtle facial activity. The book raises a fundamental scientific and ethical question: just because technology can analyse more, does that mean it can legitimately conclude more?

What the Face Doesn’t Say therefore proposes a science of the face in which rigour is inseparable from humility. Recognising uncertainty is not presented as a weakness of science, but as one of its essential principles.

The two editions also express this idea through contrasting visual identities. The Portuguese cover uses an almost completely white space in which the human face appears surrounded by silence, while the English cover places the face within a dark neural architecture, visually representing the frontier between what science can observe and what remains beyond legitimate inference.

With this new book, Freitas-Magalhães moves from the science of what the face reveals to the equally important science of what the face does not allow us to know with certainty.

What the Face Doesn’t Say — The Limits of the Science of Emotion is now available for pre-order worldwide on Kobo Books, in Portuguese and English.

F-M FACS 6.0 TESTS NOW AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH AND PORTUGUESE EDITIONS

New volume by A. Freitas-Magalhães provides the official framework for assessment and certification in the Facial Brain Coding System

The new book Facial Action Coding System 6.0: TESTS — F-MGI FACS Final Test and F-MGI FACS Final Test-Renewal, by A. Freitas-Magalhães, is now available in both English and Portuguese editions.

The volume is a practical and specialised resource developed for the assessment and certification of competencies in the use of F-M FACS 6.0 — The Facial Brain Coding System, the latest generation of the facial coding system developed by Freitas-Magalhães.

The book brings together two central assessment instruments: the F-MGI FACS Final Test (F-MGIFFT), designed to evaluate the knowledge and practical coding skills required for certification, and the F-MGI FACS Final Test-Renewal (F-MGIFFT-Re), developed for the periodic renewal and updating of certified competencies.

Structured as a guide to the complete assessment process, the publication explains the principles underlying evaluation in F-M FACS 6.0, the certification framework, the requirements associated with F-MGI FACS Certified Coders (F-MGIFCC), the organisation of the tests, supplementary resources, registration procedures and guidance for successful completion.

At the core of the book is F-M FACS 6.0, which extends facial coding beyond the traditional observation of facial muscular action by integrating a broader neurofunctional architecture of the face and its relationship with the brain, emotion and behaviour.

The cover reflects this scientific architecture through a detailed anatomical representation of facial and cervical musculature associated with the coding system, reinforcing the transition from the observable facial action to its anatomical and neurofunctional foundations.

The simultaneous publication of the English and Portuguese editions expands international access to the assessment and certification framework and provides students, researchers, clinicians and professionals with a standardised resource for testing their knowledge and practical application of F-M FACS 6.0.

For Freitas-Magalhães, assessment is an essential component of scientific coding: mastering a facial coding system requires not only knowing its codes, but also demonstrating accuracy, consistency and methodological rigour in their application.

Facial Action Coding System 6.0: TESTS is therefore conceived as the official bridge between learning, assessment and certification, consolidating the testing framework associated with the new generation of the Facial Brain Coding System.

The English and Portuguese editions are now available in Kobo Books.

A questão central ultrapassa, porém, a simples imitação.

Do outro, a face artificial.

THE FACE IS WHO WE ARE

A New Book by Dr. A. Freitas-Magalhães, Ph.D.

What does the human face truly reveal about who we are?

In The Face Is Who We Are, Professor Freitas-Magalhães presents an integrated scientific vision of the face as one of the most extraordinary expressions of the human brain. The face is approached not merely as a vehicle for communication, but as a dynamic neurobiological territory where emotion, cognition, survival, culture, and identity become visible.

Across six chapters, the book brings together some of the central concepts developed throughout Freitas-Magalhães’ research on the science of the human face: the Facial Brain Theory, the Survival Triangle Theory, the Face-Mirror Theory, and the Neurocultural Theory.

Special attention is devoted to Neuromicroexpressions — ultra-fast neurofunctional facial activations associated with the temporal dynamics of emotional processing — and to the F-M FACS 6.0, the new neurofunctional framework for decoding the expressive activity of the human face.

From neuroscience and psychology to facial biomarkers, medicine, human behaviour and artificial intelligence, the book explores a central proposition:

the face does not simply show what we feel; it makes visible part of what the brain is doing.

At the intersection of science and human identity, The Face Is Who We Are invites us to look at the face differently — not simply as appearance, but as biology, history, adaptation, relationship and emotion.

Because before words explain us,
before consciousness organises experience,
and often before we understand what we are feeling,

the face has already begun to tell our story.

THE FACE IS WHO WE ARE

A. Freitas-Magalhães

The brain activates. Emotion unfolds. The face reveals who we are.

Bilingual volume presents a pioneering field developed by Professor Freitas-Magalhães and will be released in September 2026

Pre-orders are now open for Professor Freitas-Magalhães’ new book, Os Biomarcadores Faciais — Do Sinal Neural ao Padrão Expressivo / Facial Biomarkers — From Neural Signal to Expressive Pattern, a bilingual volume presenting a pioneering approach to the scientific study of observable and measurable signals of the human face.

Scheduled for release in September 2026, the book systematises the proposal for a Science of Facial Biomarkers, a field that Freitas-Magalhães has been developing through his research into the relationship between the brain, face, emotion and human behaviour.

From this new perspective, the face is presented not merely as a vehicle for emotional communication, but as a dynamic biological system in which muscular movements, ocular and pupillary changes, head movements, autonomic responses and other observable events may constitute candidate biomarkers when they are objectively measured, contextualised, replicated and scientifically validated.

The book brings together some of the major theoretical contributions developed by Freitas-Magalhães, including the Facial Brain Theory, Survival Triangle Theory, Face-Mirror Theory and Neurocultural Theory, while also integrating Neuromicroexpressions and the F-M FACS 6.0 — The Facial Brain Coding System as fundamental elements for the identification, measurement and neurofunctional coding of facial activity.

One of the structural principles of this new science is the rigorous distinction between detecting a signal and attributing meaning to it. Facial Biomarkers are therefore presented within a probabilistic, temporal and multimodal framework, in which the strength of any inference must be proportional to the quality of the available evidence.

With potential applications in neuroscience, psychology, healthcare, behavioural analysis, artificial intelligence and human interaction, the book seeks to open a new frontier in the scientific investigation of the human face.

Pre-orders are now available ahead of the bilingual edition’s release in September 2026.

“The brain lives, the body responds, and the face leaves traces. It is in those traces that the science of Facial Biomarkers begins.”

“O cérebro vive, o corpo responde e a face deixa marcas.
