Porto is quietly famous for something most visitors never think to look for.

Lift your eyes above the doorways, above the azulejos, above the wrought iron balconies — and you’ll find them. Glass domes perched on rooftops all across the city. Each one different. Each one a small world of its own.

The clarabóia has been part of Porto’s architectural identity since the 18th century, when the city’s homes began growing taller — narrow, vertical buildings that needed a way to draw light down through their many floors. The solution was elegant: a glass eye at the top of the staircase, pulling the sky inside.

As the centuries passed, the clarabóia became more than practical. It became personal. Homeowners used them to signal taste, status, craft. Artisans poured their skill and signature into every one. No two are quite the same — which is exactly the point.

At Held, ours crowns the staircase in quiet ceremony. On still mornings, it casts the whole house in something warm and unhurried. A reminder that this building has been gathering light — and people — for over a hundred years.
