✂️ Why do plastic surgeons take scars so seriously?

And why do we often achieve such refined, high-quality scars compared with other surgical specialties?

As a plastic surgeon, I may be slightly biased… but let me explain!

🔹 1. Meticulous wound closure
In plastic surgery, closing the wound is not simply the final step of an operation — it is an essential part of the procedure itself. We take our time, carefully aligning tissues, minimising tension and placing sutures precisely. While wound closure may be delegated to other team members in some specialties

🔹 2. The dressing is our first impression
We pay particular attention to how we dress our wounds. Why? Because when a patient wakes up after surgery, the dressing is often the first visible evidence of our work. Presentation, protection and attention to detail matter.

🔹 3. We understand the science of wound healing
Plastic surgeons are trained extensively in tissue handling, blood supply, wound healing and scar formation. We understand that the quality of a scar is influenced by much more than the stitches themselves.

🔹 4. Our work doesn’t end when the wound closes
We have a range of techniques and technologies to help optimise scar maturation, including silicone therapy, scar massage, laser treatments, microneedling and other interventions when appropriate.

🔹 5. A good scar creates a happy patient
Ultimately, patients don’t just judge us by what we achieve beneath the skin. They also judge us by what they see in the mirror.

A well-healed scar can improve satisfaction, build trust and encourage patients to return to us for future procedures.

Of course, no surgeon can promise an invisible scar, and excellent wound closure is practised across many surgical specialties.

But in plastic surgery, the scar isn’t an afterthought. It’s part of the result.

شنو الفرق بين الميني تامي تك (Mini Tummy Tuck) وشد البطن الكامل (Abdominoplasty)؟ 👨🏻‍⚕️

هواية نساء، خصوصاً بعد الولادة القيصرية، تكون المشكلة عندهم مو بكل البطن، وإنما بالجلد الزايد والترهل تحت السرّة وحول ندبة القيصرية ومنطقة العانة.

بهالحالة ممكن نسوي ميني تامي تك: نشيل الجلد الزايد، نحسن شكل الندبة ونشد المنطقة السفلية من البطن. والفرق المهم هنا إنّه عادةً ما نحتاج نفصل السرّة أو نغيّر مكانها.

أما إذا الترهل موجود فوك وجوه السرّة، أو أكو تباعد بعضلات البطن، فهنا غالباً نحتاج شد بطن كامل. نشد العضلات إذا محتاجة، نشيل الجلد الزايد، والسرّة يتم تحريرها وإعادة إخراجها بمكان وشكل مناسب بعد شد الجلد.

وأكو أيضاً حل بالنص 👌🏼
بعض الحالات أسوي Mini Tummy Tuck ويا تعديل بسيط للسرّة حتى نحسن شكلها أو موقعها بدون ما نسوي شد بطن كامل.

فمو كل مريضة تحتاج Full Tummy Tuck، وبنفس الوقت مو كل ترهل ينحل بالـMini.

القرار يعتمد على كمية ومكان الجلد الزايد، حالة عضلات البطن، وموقع وشكل السرّة.

المهم نختار العملية المناسبة لجسم المريضة، مو مجرد اسم العملية.

🎗️ Cancer Awareness Month | شهر التوعية بالسرطان

Two years ago, my patient underwent a wide local excision of a skin cancer from the inner cheek, followed by local flap reconstruction.

Today, two years later, the scar is barely visible.

When treating skin cancer, our first priority is always complete and safe removal of the cancer. But as plastic and reconstructive surgeons, we also think carefully about reconstruction — restoring normal anatomy while placing scars in the least noticeable position possible.

This Cancer Awareness Month is also a reminder: if you notice a skin lesion that is new, changing, bleeding, ulcerating or simply not healing, have it assessed early.

Early diagnosis can mean simpler treatment and better reconstructive outcomes.

🎗️ شهر التوعية بالسرطان

قبل سنتين خضع أحد مرضاي لعملية استئصال واسع لسرطان جلدي من المنطقة الداخلية للخد، تلاها ترميم باستخدام سديلة جلدية موضعية (Local Flap).

واليوم، بعد مرور سنتين، أصبحت آثار العملية شبه غير مرئية والندبة بالكاد تُلاحظ.

عند علاج سرطان الجلد، تبقى الأولوية الأولى دائماً هي استئصال الورم بشكل كامل وآمن. ولكن كجراحي تجميل وترميم، نهتم أيضاً بكيفية إعادة بناء المنطقة والمحافظة على الشكل الطبيعي ووضع الندبات في أماكن تجعلها أقل وضوحاً قدر الإمكان.

وبمناسبة شهر التوعية بالسرطان، تذكّروا: إذا لاحظتم آفة جلدية جديدة، تتغير، تنزف، تتقرح أو لا تلتئم، لا تتجاهلوها وقوموا بفحصها مبكراً.

الكشف المبكر قد يعني علاجاً أبسط ونتائج ترميمية أفضل.

Can every patient with a double chin be treated with liposuction and J-Plasma? The answer is no.

The right treatment depends on what is actually causing the fullness beneath the chin.

During assessment, I look at:
• The amount and distribution of fat
• The quality and laxity of the skin
• The position and tightness of the platysma muscle
• Whether there is significant excess skin requiring a neck lift
• Whether there is descent or prominence of the submandibular glands

If the problem is mainly a small-to-moderate amount of excess fat, with good underlying anatomy and limited skin laxity, then submental liposuction combined with J-Plasma/Renuvion skin tightening can be an excellent minimally invasive option.

However, significant loose skin, platysmal banding or deeper anatomical changes may require a formal neck lift with skin excision and platysmaplasty to achieve the best result.

The key is not choosing the procedure first — it is identifying the anatomy first and then choosing the right procedure for that patient.

👁️ هل المشكلة فعلًا في الجفن العلوي فقط؟

كثير من المرضى يراجعونني وهم يشتكون من أن العين تبدو متعبة أو ثقيلة، ويعتقدون أن الحل هو إزالة الجلد الزائد من الجفن العلوي فقط.

لكن أثناء الفحص، نجد في كثير من الحالات أن المشكلة ليست في الجفن وحده، وإنما هناك أيضًا هبوط في الحاجب (Brow Ptosis)، والذي قد يزيد من ثِقَل الجلد فوق العين ويجعل المريض يرفع حاجبيه بشكل لا إرادي للتعويض.

لذلك، من المهم تقييم الحاجب والجفن العلوي كوحدة واحدة قبل اتخاذ قرار الجراحة.

في الحالات المناسبة، قد أقوم بدمج:
🔹 رفع الحاجب Brow Lift
🔹 شد الجفن العلوي Upper Blepharoplasty

والهدف ليس فقط إزالة الجلد الزائد، بل معالجة السبب بشكل متوازن للحصول على مظهر طبيعي وأكثر راحة وانتعاشًا، مع الحفاظ على تعابير الوجه.

التقييم الصحيح قبل العملية هو أهم خطوة لاختيار الإجراء المناسب لكل مريض.

💛🎀 A scarf can be more than something we wear — it can carry an important message.

The yellow scarf I’m wearing is in support of Cancer Research UK and the vital work of raising awareness, improving early detection, and advancing cancer research.

And as we enter October, we also wear pink 🎀 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a reminder of the importance of breast awareness, appropriate screening, and seeking medical advice when something doesn’t feel right.

As doctors, our responsibility goes beyond diagnosing and treating disease. We also have a duty to educate, raise awareness, and encourage our communities to take an active role in their health.

Sometimes something as simple as wearing a scarf can start a conversation — and that conversation may encourage someone to get checked. 💛🎀

إحنا كأطباء دورنا مو بس تشخيص وعلاج المرض. عدنا أيضاً مسؤولية في التثقيف الصحي ونشر الوعي وتشجيع المجتمع على الاهتمام بصحته والكشف المبكر.

وأحياناً شيء بسيط مثل وشاح ممكن يفتح حديث مهم… وهذا الحديث ممكن يشجع شخص على إجراء الفحص في الوقت المناسب. 💛🎀
