NEW MULTIDISCIPLINARY PAPER SETS OUT A NATIONAL ROADMAP FOR MASLD IN ROMANIA
Experts call for targeted fibrosis case-finding, a country-specific referral pathway, an integrated multidisciplinary model of care, and the implementation of a National MASLD Action Plan.
We are pleased to share a new multidisciplinary Position Paper on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in Romania, initiated and coordinated by Prof. Liana Gheorghe, co-authored by Prof. Jeffrey V. Lazarus, and developed with the contribution of remarkable national and international experts in the field. The paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases.
Entitled “Metabolic Dysfunction-associated Steatotic Liver Disease in Romania: A Multidisciplinary Position Paper on Prevalence, Clinical Spectrum, Prevention, Screening and Management,” the paper brings together scientific evidence, Romanian estimates, the 2024 EASL–EASD–EASO recommendations, and health policy perspectives to formulate ten consensus recommendations for action.
With approximately 5 million Romanian adults — an estimated 30–33% of the adult population — potentially affected by MASLD, the paper highlights the urgent need to identify patients at risk of fibrosis progression and to act before advanced liver disease develops.
The proposed roadmap calls for targeted fibrosis case-finding, a country-specific clinical care pathway, an integrated multidisciplinary model of care, and the development of a National MASLD Action Plan — translating scientific consensus into concrete national action.
Several of these principles are already being translated into practice through LIVE(RO)4, creating a direct link between scientific consensus and real-world implementation in prevention, screening, early diagnosis, risk stratification, and access to care.
The central message is clear: advanced liver disease is not inevitable. Identifying fibrosis before cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma develop is increasingly a matter of organisation and implementation, not of technology.
We are proud of this important collaborative achievement and deeply grateful to all national and international experts whose expertise, commitment, and multidisciplinary collaboration made this work possible.
