L’Université d’Etat de chimie et de pharmacie de Saint-Pétersbourg Saint Petersburg State Chemical Pharmaceutical Academy was founded in 1919 and is one of the oldest and best higher education establishments in Russia.

This is the leading higher education institution of Russia in the training of the specialists for Pharmacy and Biotechnology fields. In 2003 the Academy was recognized as the best Russian higher education establishment and became a gold medal winner “European Quality” as the laureate of the competition in the “100 Best State Universities of Russia” nomination. Dear members of our community!
On July 10, 2026, nine full-time master's degree students from the Department of Economics and Management, who completed their master's degree program in "Organization and Management of Pharmaceutical Production," defended their final qualifying theses at the St. Petersburg State Chemical-Pharmaceutical University. The students' theses addressed current organizational and managerial challenges facing the domestic pharmaceutical industry, including developing export potential, conducting marketing analysis of various market segments and assessing the prospects for domestic manufacturers to enter them, analyzing the level and dynamics of drug prices at the regional level, and improving personnel management in pharmaceutical production. Most of the theses were defended at a very high level, and the students were asked numerous questions by members of the state examination committee, which included representatives of the pharmaceutical companies Biocad, Active Component, Pharmproekt, and the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums. The students answered most of the questions fully, competently, and professionally, demonstrating a high level of preparation, a thorough mastery of theoretical material, and practical skills in solving current problems in the field of organizing and managing pharmaceutical production. It is especially noteworthy that six graduates received their diplomas with honors! I wish our master's students continued professional success, successful development, reaching new heights, career advancement, and interesting work for the benefit of the Russian pharmaceutical industry! 🏅🎖🏆

Experts have determined why foreign pharmaceutical companies maintain their market share. The share of foreign drugs in the Russian pharmaceutical market continues to decline for the seventh consecutive year. By the end of 2025, it stood at 54.1% in monetary terms—down 2.1 percentage points from the previous year. In physical terms, the decline was even more significant: imported products accounted for only 35.4% of packages. However, in value terms, foreign manufacturers continue to outperform domestic ones. This is due to their dominance in the innovative, high-cost therapy segment, according to a report by the St. Petersburg Chemical and Pharmaceutical University and the Analytical Center under the Government of the Russian Federation.

It is expensive drugs (over 50,000 rubles) that increasingly determine the structure of public procurement. Over five years, their share of the total volume increased by 16.3 percentage points and reached 48.1% in 2025. Foreign companies dominate this segment, accounting for 65.8% of all supplies of such drugs through government procurement. Seven international companies, including Roche, Novartis, and AstraZeneca, are among the top 10 largest suppliers.

However, according to the report, Russian manufacturers are gradually regaining this position. Their share of government procurement of drugs over 50,000 rubles increased by 10.3 percentage points over five years, reaching 24.5% by the end of 2025. For example, in the structure of anticancer drug procurement, where the most expensive therapies are concentrated, Biocad has already taken second place in terms of supply volume (52.6 billion rubles), behind only Roche (60.1 billion). Researchers call this "a transformation of import substitution—from generics to biosimilars and proprietary molecules."

Experts interviewed by Kommersant noted the potential for further growth but also warned of systemic limitations. Since 2022, many international companies have suspended new clinical trials in Russia, which is slowing the registration of innovations.

The Inpharma Association believes that international pharmaceutical manufacturers have the resources to invest in innovations, which typically take decades to pay off. In addition to significant investment and a lengthy research cycle, developing an original drug entails a high level of scientific and commercial risks, added Alexander Bykov, Director of Healthcare Economics at R-Pharm.
