Celebrating Excellence, Strengthening the Future of Women's Health

The success of ECSACOG is a testament to the power of regional collaboration, quality training, mentorship, and a shared commitment to advancing specialist education in Obstetrics and Gynaecology across East, Central, and Southern Africa.

We are especially proud of the Rwandan Obstetrics and Gynecology residents among this year's graduates, whose achievement marks an important milestone in their professional journey and the beginning of a new chapter as members of the Rwanda Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RSOG).

These newly qualified specialists are the future of women's healthcare. As clinicians, educators, researchers, advocates, mentors, and leaders, they will play a vital role in improving the health and well-being of women and girls in Rwanda and throughout the region.

This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of the Rwandan faculty, senior specialists, trainers, mentors, examiners, teaching hospitals, and ECSACOG faculty, whose unwavering commitment to education, mentorship, and professional excellence has guided these residents throughout their training. Their contribution continues to strengthen the next generation of specialists and the future of women's healthcare.

Together, this milestone reflects what can be achieved through strong partnerships, sustained investment in specialist training, and a shared vision of building a skilled and resilient healthcare workforce for Africa.

Strengthening Partnerships, Advancing Women's Health

As part of the SRHR Project Rwanda, RSOG had the privilege of accompanying Dr. Diane Francoeur, CEO of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), on visits to the Ministry of Health and Jali Health Centre.

The visits provided an opportunity to showcase the impact of the project, including investments in equipment, healthcare workforce capacity strengthening, and service delivery initiatives that support maternal health and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). They also facilitated valuable discussions on strengthening health systems, fostering sustainable partnerships, and expanding access to quality healthcare for women and girls across Rwanda.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Health, Global Affairs Canada, L'AMIE, and SOGC for their continued collaboration and shared commitment to improving maternal and reproductive health outcomes across Rwanda.

Advancing regional collaboration to improve women's and newborn health across Africa.

During the 12th RSOG Annual Scientific Conference 2026, leaders from the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) and the African Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (AFOG) convened for a consultative meeting to explore opportunities for deeper partnership and collaboration in advancing women's and newborn health across the continent.

The meeting brought together representatives from Rwanda, Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Ghana, and FIGO leadership to discuss shared priorities, including strengthening professional associations, promoting knowledge exchange, supporting workforce development, and improving health outcomes for women and newborns.

The discussions reinforced the importance of regional and global partnerships in addressing common challenges, sharing best practices, and supporting locally driven solutions that respond to the needs of African countries and their populations.

As professional societies continue to play a critical role in shaping clinical practice, training, research, and advocacy, stronger collaboration across the region remains essential to advancing quality healthcare and achieving better outcomes for women and newborns.

The conversations reinforced the conference theme, "Healthy Girls, Healthy Women: The Foundation of a Thriving Nation," and highlighted the collective responsibility of strengthening health systems and improving outcomes for women across Rwanda and beyond.

During the 12th RSOG Annual Scientific Conference 2026, Dr. Ndayizigiye Jean Marie Vianney, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health, reaffirmed the Government of Rwanda's commitment to strengthening women's health through investment in healthcare workforce development, mentorship, innovation, and equitable access to quality care.

Reflecting on the conference theme, "Healthy Girls, Healthy Women: The Foundation of a Thriving Nation," he emphasized that this is far more than a conference theme. It is a vision that recognizes the central role of women and girls in the development, prosperity, and future of the nation.

He highlighted the achievements of the 4x4 Programme, which continues to expand specialist training capacity and build a new generation of obstetricians and gynecologists equipped to serve as clinicians, researchers, educators, mentors, advocates, and leaders.

A key milestone has been the decentralization of specialist training and services beyond Kigali, enabling more communities across Rwanda to access high-quality obstetric and gynecological care closer to where they live. This expansion is helping strengthen equitable access to specialist healthcare while improving service delivery nationwide.

Looking ahead, he underscored the importance of ensuring that all Rwandans benefit from advanced, evidence-based healthcare services, including assisted reproductive technologies and other specialized women's health services.

Drawing inspiration from Abraham Lincoln's words:

“All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”

He concluded with a powerful reminder on the importance of mentorship and succession planning in healthcare:

“Success without successors is a total failure.”
