🫁 Bag-Mask Ventilation (BVM)
When a patient requires immediate respiratory support, bag-mask ventilation is a fundamental technique for providing assisted ventilation.
🔹 What is it?
A manual ventilation technique that uses a resuscitation bag and face mask to deliver breaths to a patient who is not breathing adequately or is apneic.
🔹 When is it used?
• During respiratory arrest
• When spontaneous breathing is inadequate
• During cardiopulmonary resuscitation when ventilation is required
• As temporary ventilatory support until an advanced airway can be established
🔹 Key elements of effective ventilation:
✔️ Selecting the appropriate mask size
✔️ Achieving a good mask seal
✔️ Maintaining a patent airway
✔️ Providing appropriate ventilation while avoiding excessive ventilation
✔️ Monitoring the patient's response and ventilation effectiveness
⚠️ BVM ventilation should be performed by trained healthcare professionals according to established clinical protocols.
Effective ventilation starts with the right technique.
