Magnesium supports normal blood pressure
Research supports the importance of magnesium for normal blood pressure, especially in individuals with insulin resistance, prediabetes or non-communicable chronic diseases.
In one study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers pooled the effect of magnesium supplementation on blood pressure in participants with preclinical or non-communicable diseases.
The meta-analysis included 11 randomized controlled trials and 543 subjects, with follow-up periods ranging from 1 to 6 months. The average dosage of magnesium used in the trials ranged from 365 to 450 mg/day. The studies reported blood pressure at the beginning and end of the trials.
The groups supplementing with magnesium had significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, at 4.18 mm Hg and 2.27 mm Hg respectively.
The results of this analysis suggest that magnesium is essential in supporting normal blood pressure in individuals with insulin resistance, prediabetes, or other noncommunicable chronic diseases.
Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems that regulate diverse biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose control, and blood pressure regulation. Magnesium is required for energy production, oxidative phosphorylation, and glycolysis. It contributes to the structural development of bone and is required for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and the antioxidant glutathione. Magnesium also plays a role in the active transport of calcium and potassium ions across cell membranes, a process that is important to nerve impulse conduction, muscle contraction, and normal heart rhythm.

The four D’s – dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia, and death are possible results of a severe deficiency of niacin (vitamin B3). Also known as pellagra, severe niacin deficiency is rarely seen today.

An interesting fact involves its name. Originally known only as nicotinic acid, the name was changed in the 1940s. When nicotinic acid was added to enriched flour along with other B vitamins and iron, many people mistakenly believed to***co was added to the bread after seeing nicotinic acid on the label. So, to avoid confusion the Food and Nutrition Board changed the name to niacin, a derivative of NIcotinic ACid + vitamIN.

Go to the short article to learn about niacin’s role in health and where to get it in your diet.
