Did you know that adding more dietary fibre to your daily meals can support healthy digestion, help you feel fuller for longer, and contribute to your overall well-being?

1. START YOUR DAY WITH A FIBRE-RICH BREAKFAST

Breakfast is a great opportunity to add more fibre to your diet. Try topping your oats with fresh fruits such as apples, bananas, or berries. You can also choose whole-wheat bread instead of white bread.

Why it helps: Fibre supports digestive health and can help you feel satisfied for longer, making it easier to maintain a balanced eating routine.

2. MAKE YOUR LUNCH MORE NUTRITIOUS

You don’t need expensive or complicated meals to eat healthily! Traditional foods can be wonderful sources of dietary fibre. Include daal, chickpeas, beans, whole-wheat roti, and seasonal vegetables in your lunch.

Try this simple combination: Daal + whole-wheat roti + cooked vegetables. A familiar, balanced meal that adds fibre to your everyday diet!

3. MAKE YOUR SNACKS COUNT

When afternoon cravings strike, choose nutritious snacks that provide more than just quick energy. Fresh whole fruits, guava, apples, pears, and roasted chana are convenient options to consider.

4. DON’T FORGET TO DRINK ENOUGH WATER!

If you’re increasing your fibre intake, remember to increase it gradually and drink enough fluids throughout the day. This helps your digestive system adjust and supports healthy bowel movements.

5. BUILD HEALTHY HABITS, ONE MEAL AT A TIME!

You don’t have to make all the changes at once. Start with one small step, such as adding fruit to breakfast, including vegetables at lunch, or choosing roasted chana instead of a low-fibre snack.

Remember, consistency matters more than perfection!

A NOTE FROM YOUR NUTRITIONIST:
Everyone’s nutritional needs are different. If you follow a prescribed diet or have a digestive condition, consult your healthcare professional for advice tailored to your needs.

A diagnosis is never someone’s fault.

When someone shares a breast cancer diagnosis, they deserve kindness not questions about what they ate, how they lived or what they “should have done differently.”

This post is a reminder to leave judgement behind. Conversations about food and wellbeing should offer support, never make someone feel responsible for their illness.

Sometimes, care sounds like:
“I’m here to listen.”
“Would you like some company?”
“Can I help with a meal or an errand?”

You don’t need the perfect words. Listen without assumptions, respect their feelings and let them tell you what support they need.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s make compassion part of awareness.

Share this gentle reminder everyone deserves care without blame.

Nutrition supports care
During illness or treatment, food can offer nourishment, comfort and a sense of routine but it does not replace medical treatment.
Every person’s experience is different. Appetite, taste, digestion, energy levels and nutritional needs may change throughout treatment, which is why generic advice is not always appropriate.
Supportive nutrition should be personal, flexible and guided by the individual’s medical team. Sometimes the priority may be variety; at other times, it may simply be finding foods the person can comfortably tolerate.
There should be no pressure to eat “perfectly.” Care begins with listening.

Your next snack can be simple
Your snack doesn’t need to be elaborate to feel satisfying. Sometimes, the simplest combinations work beautifully.
Fruit with plain yoghurt offers a refreshing mix of flavour and texture, while roasted chana is convenient, crunchy and easy to carry on a busy day.
There is no single “perfect” snack. The better choice is the one that suits your appetite, routine and preferences and is realistically available when you need it.
Which one would you choose today: fruit with yoghurt or roasted chana?

Can food prevent breast cancer?

The honest answer is: no single food can guarantee protection or prevent breast cancer. However, a varied and nourishing eating pattern can support overall health and may help reduce certain lifestyle-related risks.

Instead of searching for one “miracle food,” focus on the bigger picture:

Include a variety of vegetables and fruits.
Choose whole grains and fibre-rich foods where possible.
Add pulses such as daal, chickpeas and beans.
Aim for balanced meals rather than restrictive diets.
Support your health through regular movement and other healthy habits.

Food is one part of the picture. Breast cancer risk can also involve age, genetics, family history, lifestyle and factors outside our control. This is why a diagnosis should never be blamed on someone’s food choices.

Healthy habits can support wellbeing, but they cannot eliminate risk or replace medical care and recommended screening. Let’s share nutrition information with honesty, compassion and without miracle claims.

Save this as a reminder: think patterns, not superfoods and choose care over blame.

Healthy eating can start with a bowl of daal.

Familiar, affordable and full of possibilities daal is an everyday staple that deserves a place in conversations about nourishing food.

It provides plant-based protein and fibre, and pairs beautifully with foods you already enjoy. Serve it with roti or rice, add a seasonal vegetable or fresh salad, and you have a simple starting point for a varied meal.

Try adding palak, alternating between masoor, moong and chana daal, or experimenting with your favourite spices to keep meals interesting.

That’s what this post is about: making healthy eating feel practical and familiar. Small, consistent choices can begin with the food on your family’s table.
