✈️ Building capacity and strengthening safety across our island aerodromes.

As part of IDC's ongoing Aerodrome Restructuring Programme, FOD (Foreign Object Debris) inspection training was recently conducted on Desroches Island with the aerodrome team.

The session combined classroom presentations with practical runway exercises, providing the team with hands-on experience in carrying out effective FOD inspections and strengthening aerodrome safety practices.

The first training session was successfully completed, with valuable feedback gathered to support the continued development and improvement of the programme.

TODAY IN HISTORY 🌴 | 14 AUGUST

The Day Assomption Was Named

On 14 August 1756, Captain Nicolas Morphey discovered an island in the remote southwest of the Seychelles. He gave it the name Assomption, after the religious feast celebrated the very next day — the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

But what makes this island so fascinating?

📍 Just 30 km from Aldabra, Assomption covers about 1,171 hectares and stretches roughly 7 km from northeast to southwest.

🏖️ Almost half of its coastline is beach — about 7.7 km in total. Its famous Settlement Beach has often been described as one of the most beautiful beaches in Seychelles.

🏜️ Its landscape is unusual too: limestone rises several metres above sea level, while enormous sand dunes in the southeast reach around 30 metres high.

🌊 And beneath the surface lies another remarkable story. Assomption's surrounding waters are rich in coral and marine life, and the island was part of the underwater world filmed around Assomption and Aldabra for Jacques Cousteau's legendary The Silent World.

270 years ago, Assomption entered the map. Its story is still being written.

🐢Day 2: Learning conservation by doing. 🌿

This afternoon, our Eco-School leaders continued their hands-on learning experience with a visit to the Aldabra Giant Tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) pen on Silhouette Island.

During the session, participants learned how to conduct a tortoise census, including the basic methods used to observe, identify and record individuals within a population. They then had the opportunity to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice by carrying out the census themselves. 📝🐢

The practical activity allowed participants to demonstrate their understanding while gaining valuable experience in wildlife monitoring and conservation.

By combining theory with field-based activities, the Eco-School Camp continues to equip teachers and facilitators with practical skills that they can share with students and use to strengthen environmental education in their respective schools. 💚

📸 Here are some moments from this afternoon’s tortoise census activity.

🌿Day 2: Exploring, discovering and learning from nature. 🌿

Day 2 of the Teacher and Facilitators’ Eco-School Camp took participants deeper into the natural environment of Silhouette Island with a hike to Jardins Maron. 🥾🌳

Moving away from the more populated La Passe area, the group had the opportunity to experience a very different side of the island, discovering extensive Coco-de-mer forests and an impressive diversity of flora and fauna along the way. 🌴💚

The hike provided participants with a valuable opportunity to observe these natural habitats firsthand and appreciate the remarkable biodiversity found within Silhouette’s interior.

Experiences such as these form an important part of the Eco-School Camp, allowing teachers and facilitators to strengthen their environmental knowledge through direct interaction with nature — knowledge and experiences they can later share with students in their respective schools.

📸 Here are some highlights from today’s journey into the greener, wilder side of Silhouette Island.

🌊♻️ Learning Through Action at the Eco-School Camp! 🌿

This afternoon, our teachers and facilitators took environmental education beyond the classroom as they joined the Island Conservation Society (ICS) for a trek to Anse Patate, Silhouette Island, where they participated in a marine debris collection activity.

Along the shoreline, participants worked together to collect marine debris before taking part in a hands-on session on sorting and identifying different types of waste materials. The activity provided a practical look at the challenges posed by marine litter and the importance of proper waste management, recycling and responsible disposal.

Through experiences like these, the Eco-School Camp is equipping teachers and facilitators with practical knowledge and activities that they can share with students at their respective schools, helping to inspire greater environmental awareness and action. 🌍💚

📸 Here are a few moments from this afternoon’s trek, clean-up and waste-sorting session!

🌿 Eco-School Camp 2026 Begins on Silhouette Island! 🌿

This week marks the start of our Eco-School Camp, beginning with the Teacher and Facilitators’ Training Camp.

The first group of teachers and facilitators arrived on Silhouette Island this morning, ready to embark on an exciting three-day camp filled with learning, exploration and hands-on environmental experiences. 🌱🌊

The training is designed to equip participants with knowledge, practical experience and inspiration that they can take back to their respective schools, helping them guide and engage Eco-School students in environmental education and conservation.

Over the next three days, participants will immerse themselves in the island’s unique environment while strengthening their capacity to inspire the next generation of young environmental stewards. 🌍💚

Let the Eco-School Camp journey begin!
