In a recent interview, Dr. Eric Licea shared his journey with Seychelles, his medical philosophy, and the vision behind Victoria Aesthetics Wellness Centre.

GYNECOMASTIA: IS IT JUST FAT OR IS THERE SOMETHING MORE?

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of glandular breast tissue in men and can affect one or both sides of the chest.
It is a relatively common condition and, although it is often benign, not every case has the same cause. It may be related to natural hormonal changes, certain medications, some medical conditions, or the use of particular substances.
That is why, before thinking only about how to get rid of it, it is important to answer one question:
WHY IS IT HAPPENING?: Gynecomastia can occur when there is a change in the balance between the effects of androgens and estrogens on breast tissue.
It may appear during stages of hormonal change, such as:
• Puberty
• Adulthood
• Ageing
It may also be associated with:
🔸 Certain medications
🔸 Use of anabolic steroids or other substances
🔸 Some supplements used to increase muscle mass
🔸 Hormonal imbalances
🔸 Liver or kidney disease
🔸 Certain testicular or endocrine disorders

In some patients, no specific cause can be identified.
Gynecomastia may cause:
🔸 Enlargement of one or both breasts
🔸 Firm or rubbery tissue beneath or around the ni**le
🔸 Tenderness or pain in some patients
🔸 Swelling around the ar**la
🔸 Asymmetry between the two sides
However, not every increase in male chest size is necessarily gynecomastia.
In some men, the enlargement is mainly caused by fat accumulation, known as pseudogynecomastia, which is why a medical assessment can help determine the difference.

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEE A DOCTOR?
Although most cases are benign, any new or unexplained change in the male breast or chest should be evaluated, especially if you notice:
⚠️ A hard or irregular lump
⚠️ Rapid or clearly one-sided enlargement
⚠️ Ni**le discharge or bleeding
⚠️ Ni**le retraction or other ni**le changes
⚠️ Changes in the skin
⚠️ Persistent pain
⚠️ A testicular lump or other associated symptoms

These findings do not automatically imply a serious condition, but they do warrant a proper medical evaluation.
The first step is to determine the type of breast enlargement present and whether there is an underlying cause requiring further investigation.

Gynecomastia is a medical condition; it is nothing to be ashamed of.
