1. Definition:
Dehydration is the result of negative fluid balance, when fluid loss exceeds intake. In children, it's most commonly secondary to gastroenteritis.
2. Why Children are More Vulnerable?
- Higher body surface area to weight ratio
- Higher metabolic rate and insensible losses
- Immature renal concentrating ability
- Dependence on caregivers for fluid intake
3. Etiology:
- *GI losses:* Acute gastroenteritis (Rotavirus, E.coli), vomiting
- *Decreased intake:* Stomatitis, pharyngitis, anorexia
- *Increased losses:* Fever, DKA, diabetes insipidus, burns
- *Third space loss:* Sepsis, hypoalbuminemia
