Thank you MQ Mental Health Research for your commitment to mental health research and for your well wishes 🎂

We’re proud to work with you on research that improves lives, transforms care and helps us better understand mental health 💛 Our partnership on the NIHR Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration Mission is making it easier for people with experience of mental health to inform and take part in research, and get involved in projects like EPICare which is helping to spot and diagnose early psychosis in young people .

Looking forward to building on our collaboration and creating even more opportunities for research to make a difference in the future!

Today is World Mental Health Day 🧠 Around 1 in 4 adults experience at least one mental health problem a year in the UK. Around 1 in 10 children also live with mental health illness.

Studies we have supported have helped improve UK mental health treatments and care. These include:

👧 Preventing mental health problems in children
😔 Understanding the link between loneliness and depression
👨‍💻 Using virtual reality technology to overcome psychosis
💗 Improving quality of life for heart disease patients
💬 Getting talking therapies to the people who need it most
🕷️ Tackling phobias effectively

Could you take part in mental health research?

For the past 20 years, we have expanded research beyond traditional academic settings.

🤩 By giving more people more opportunities to get involved in and deliver research, we are building the foundations for long-term growth and a more diverse workforce. This helps transform new ideas into better care, better services, and better health outcomes for everyone.

🤩 Through investing in people, places, partnerships and culture, we are building a skilled and resilient workforce equipped to solve the health and care challenges of tomorrow.

Take a look at the latest in our NIHR20 Gamechanger series (link in the first comment, below) to find out how we are building the foundations for research, for the health and wealth of our nation.

Mums whose babies contracted life-threatening sepsis and meningitis which developed from are calling on pregnant women to take part in a new NIHR-supported trial for a vaccine.

Around 1 in every 1,000 babies in the UK and Ireland develop a Group B strep infection. It is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborns, causing sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis and can be fatal in newborns if left untreated.

Around 50 babies die each year in the UK, and a further 70 babies survive with long-term disabilities such as hearing loss, vision problems, cerebral palsy or developmental difficulties.

The NIHR-supported BEATRIX study is the first large-scale phase 3 vaccine trial in the world for Group B strep. It is being developed by researchers from the NHS and UK universities, alongside international partners.

Families impacted by Group B strep are welcoming the trial, and encouraging mums-to-be to consider taking part and give hope to future parents.

Throughout her life, Nathalie has lived with anxiety and depression.

Now, she is taking part in research into a new way to treat major depression, after she was invited to take part through our Be Part of Research service.

💻 Our free UK-wide service that makes it easier than ever for everyone to take part in life-changing health and care research.

The HOME study is using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) - a form of neurostimulation that delivers a constant, low-intensity electrical current across specific areas of the brain via electrodes placed on the scalp.

🧠 It gently alters the electrical activity in brain regions that regulate mood. These are often underactive in people experiencing severe depression. It aims to stimulate brain function and alleviate depressive symptoms.

Now, Nathalie is encouraging others to sign up to Be Part of Research too.

💬 She said: “I would 1000% recommend signing up to Be Part of Research. Without it, I wouldn’t have found out about this study. I especially like the personalisation of it, how it caters research to you and your interests.”

Last year, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence approved the one-off gene editing therapy called Casgevy for use on the NHS in England to treat severe sickle cell disease.

However, more research needs to be done to identify further treatments. Nathalie Nicholas, one of our research nurses in Liverpool, explains why we need more people to get involved in sickle cell disease research.
