If magnesium is supposed to stop night cramps... why do so many people still wake up with them?
Every summer, I get asked the same question
Should I take magnesium for muscle cramps?
It's a fair question and the answer is more interesting than most people expect.
Magnesium plays an important role in normal muscle function and helps muscles relax after they contract.
But muscles don't work using just one mineral.
A randomized clinical trial published in JAMA found that magnesium performed no better than a placebo for most older adults with nocturnal leg cramps. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis, including nine clinical trials and more than 600 participants, reached a similar conclusion: for most people, magnesium alone doesn't appear to provide meaningful relief.
So why?
Because your muscles work like an electrical system.
Sodium helps start the nerve signal.
Calcium triggers the muscle to contract.
Potassium helps reset the system.
Magnesium helps muscles relax after they contract.
Your body carefully regulates these minerals every second of every day. Even small changes can influence how your muscles and nerves function.
Can magnesium help? Sometimes. But not always.
Muscle cramps rarely have a single cause and they rarely have a single solution.
That's why, particularly for people who sweat heavily, exercise regularly, or spend long periods in the heat, I generally prefer a balanced electrolyte supplement rather than automatically reaching for magnesium alone.
Recurring muscle cramps can also be linked to medications, circulation problems, nerve conditions, dehydration, or other medical issues.
If your cramps are frequent, severe, or new, it's important to speak with your healthcare provider.

It's
Am I giving my muscles and nerves everything they need to function normally?
