Returning home after a severe traumatic brain injury is an important step, but it does not always mean that recovery is stable. This study looked at adults who were living at home 1 year after injury and followed their situation 5 years after injury. A subgroup had several later difficulties at the same time, including low mood, anxiety, low satisfaction with life, and further hospital care. This group also had poorer dai-ly functioning, lower participation in community life, poorer general health, lower productive activity, and less stable living arrangements. The findings suggest that people who return home after severe traumatic brain injury may still need planned follow-up and sup-port over time. Rehabilitation services should view home return as a point for continued monitoring, not as the end of recovery.

Autonomous bladder training for neurogenic bladder: a randomized controlled trial

People with neurogenic bladder often have difficulty emptying their bladder because of damage to the nervous system. This can lead to repeated urinary problems, discomfort, and a reduced quality of life. We studied whether a structured bladder training pro-gramme could help these patients regain better blad-der control. In this study, 168 adults received either the training programme together with usual rehabili-tation care or usual care alone. After 4 weeks, people who received the training were able to empty their bladder more effectively and reported fewer bladder-related symptoms. They also had fewer urinary infec-tions requiring antibiotic treatment, although this fin-ding needs further confirmation. Some benefits were still present at 12 weeks. These findings suggest that structured bladder training may be a useful addition to routine rehabilitation and may help patients manage their bladder more independently.

Lung function and ventilatory response during high-intensity treadmill walking in adults with cerebral palsy: a cross-sectional study

This study explored how adults with cerebral pal-sy breathe during exercise and how their feelings of breathlessness relate to actual breathing capacity. In total, 89 out of 100 included participants performed lung function and exercise tests according to standardi-zed guidelines. Most participants had normal lung fun-ction, but those with more severe mobility challenges had lower breathing capacity and fitness levels. During intense exercise, 70% showed signs of limited brea-thing reserve, yet only 40% said breathlessness stop-ped them when performing exercise testing. Interes-tingly, their actual breathing reserve did not differ much whether they felt breathless or not. Breathing patterns during exercise were typical across all mobility levels. These findings suggest that while lung function is gene-rally normal in adults with cerebral palsy, breathing capacity may still limit the exercise ability.

The Combined Use of Non-Invasive Neurostimulation with Interactive Digital Technologies in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation: A Scoping Review

This review looked at how combining electrical stimu-lation with interactive digital tools, such as virtual rea-lity or video games, may support rehabilitation after spinal cord injury. We found 12 studies involving 51 participants. These approaches often used electrical stimulation to activate muscles while people interac-ted with digital environments, for example by cycling, balancing, or playing game-like tasks. Overall, studies reported improvements in movement, balance, hand function, and independence. Many also reported that the training was enjoyable and motivating, which may help people stay engaged in rehabilitation. However, most studies were small and early-stage, meaning the results are not yet strong enough to draw firm conclusions. More high-quality research is needed to understand whether these combined approaches lead to lasting benefits and can be widely used in clinical practice.

Outpatient rehabilitation can prevent su***de after acquired brain injury

The frequency of su***de after stroke and traumatic brain injury has been found to be higher than in the general population. This study compared patients from an outpatient rehabilitation programme for adults with acquired brain injuries with a matched control group. From the Swedish National Patient Register, 5 controls were selected for each treated patient, matched by diagnosis codes, age, gender, and date of first delivery of care. Data on causes of death were obtained from the Swedish Cause of Death Register for both groups. No su***des occurred among the treated group. In the control group, 26 individuals had cause of death recor-ded as “Intentional self-harm” and 14 as “Event of undetermined intent”. These findings suggest that tre-atment by a specialized outpatient rehabilitation team may be effective in preventing su***de, and that a structured follow-up rehabilitation programme should be offered to patients with brain injury.
