Out of the total cases of diverticular disease, 20% may experience inflammation (diverticulitis) or bleeding which mostly can be treated without surgery. Diverticulitis can be treated by antibiotics but surgery may be necessary in complicated diverticulitis. Uncommonly, bleeding diverticuli may also require surgery.
