Diverticulitis can develop when small pouches in the colon, known as diverticuli, become inflamed or infected.

When mild, diverticulitis can be treated with antibiotics and bowel rest.

If symptoms do not improve with antibiotics, or if complications such as a colonic perforation or intra-abdominal abscess occur, surgery may be needed to remove the affected segment of the bowel.

A yellowing of the eyes or skin should not be dismissed, especially in adults. This may be a sign of jaundice, which occurs when bilirubin builds up in the body.

Jaundice can point to an underlying issue involving the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts or pancreas. Possible causes include gallstones, bile duct obstruction, liver conditions such as hepatitis, autoimmune or blood disorders, and certain medications. In some cases, it may also be linked to cancer of the pancreas, liver or bile ducts.

As jaundice in adults is not considered normal, timely medical evaluation is important to identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment.

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, typically caused by a viral infection (hepatitis A, B, C, D and E).

Haemorrhoids (piles) are abnormally enlarged blood vessels in and around the a**s, that can cause bleeding, or prolapse out of the a**s.

When pressure is exerted on the veins in the pelvic and re**al areas, the blood vessels swell and stretch. This also explains why haemorrhoids are common during pregnancy, when the enlarging uterus presses on the veins.

Other common causes of piles include chronic constipation, excessive straining during bowel movements, and prolonged sitting on the toilet.

Gallstones do not always require treatment, especially if they are not causing symptoms. However, when gallstones become painful or lead to complications, surgery to remove the gallbladder is recommended as the most effective long-term treatment.

Although gallbladder removal is considered a major abdominal procedure, most patients are able to go home on the same day or the day after surgery. For those who require an open procedure, a slightly longer hospital stay may be needed.

It is normal to experience some discomfort after surgery, including mild pain, nausea, or vomiting; these symptoms are typically well managed with medication. As your body adapts to the absence of the gallbladder, you may also notice temporary bloating and loose stools. These usually improve within a couple of weeks.

Once discharged, most patients can resume light activities and daily routines. With proper recovery and follow-up, many are able to return to work within a week.
