Your cat’s gums can tell you more than you might think.

A quick look at gum colour may provide an important clue that something is wrong:

1) Pink gums are generally a healthy sign.
2) Very pale or white gums may indicate anaemia, blood loss or another underlying condition.
3) Yellow gums can indicate jaundice caused by increased bilirubin and may be associated with haemolysis, liver disease, bile duct obstruction or other serious conditions.

For cats with FeLV or FIV, checking the gums can be particularly useful because anaemia and other complications may develop as the disease progresses.

Also watch for changes such as lethargy, poor appetite, weight loss, recurrent infections or problems in the mouth.

🚨 Very pale or yellow gums can be an emergency. If you notice either, especially together with weakness, difficulty breathing, collapse, poor appetite or other signs of illness, contact your veterinarian immediately.

A few seconds checking your cat’s gums could help you notice an important change early.

FeLV can progress quietly.

A cat with FeLV may still look healthy, especially during the early stages of infection. But changes can already be occurring internally, including changes in blood parameters and immune function. As the disease progresses, some cats may develop anaemia, become more susceptible to secondary infections, lose weight, or show other clinical signs.

That’s why early detection and regular monitoring matter.

🐱 Why Do Some FeLV-Positive Cats Live for Years While Others Decline Rapidly?

Two cats.

The same virus.

Completely different outcomes.

Some FeLV-positive cats continue living happy lives for many years. Others may become seriously ill within months.

Why?

The answer isn't simple.

Research shows that several factors work together to influence how the disease progresses, including:

🧬 The type of FeLV infection

🛡️ The cat's immune system

🦠 The amount of virus (viral load)

💊 Secondary infections

❤️ Nutrition, age, genetics, stress, and veterinary care

This is why FeLV is not a "one prognosis fits all" disease. Every cat deserves an individualised treatment plan based on its clinical condition and stage of infection.

🚨 FeLV and FIV don't always cause obvious symptoms in the early stages.

Because many infected cats initially appear healthy, these viral infections are often overlooked or mistaken for minor health issues. As a result, some pet owners only become aware of the seriousness of the disease when their cat's condition has already deteriorated.

Over time, FeLV and FIV can weaken the immune system, increasing the risk of infections, mouth disease, weight loss, anaemia, and other serious health complications.

Sadly, we often meet pet owners when their cats are already critically ill and they are desperately searching for answers. This is why awareness is so important, especially for owners of outdoor cats or cats with unknown backgrounds, as these animals are at a higher risk of exposure.

Recurring fever, repeated infections, poor recovery from illness, unexplained weight loss, or persistent mouth inflammation are all warning signs that should not be ignored. If these symptoms are present, testing for FeLV and FIV may help identify the underlying cause.

Many owners feel devastated when they learn that their cat has tested positive for FeLV or FIV, particularly when they are told there is no definitive cure. However, a positive diagnosis is not the end of the story.

The good news is that many FeLV and FIV-positive cats can still enjoy a good quality of life with proper veterinary care, good nutrition, stress reduction, regular monitoring, and long-term supportive management.
