🏛️ LET’S FIND OUT: Private Columbarium vs Public Columbarium — What’s the Difference?

When choosing a final resting place for a loved one, families in Singapore generally have the option of a public or private columbarium. But what’s the difference?

🏢 Public Columbarium
Usually more affordable and practical, with standardised niche designs and arrangements. A suitable choice for families looking for a simple and dignified resting place.

🌿 Private Columbarium
Generally offers more choices in niche designs, locations and surroundings. Some may provide air-conditioned halls, more comfortable visiting spaces and additional memorial or religious facilities. Prices can vary significantly depending on the location and niche selected.

There is no one “better” choice — it depends on your family’s budget, preferences, religious needs and how you would like to visit and remember your loved one.

At Affinity Funeral Service, we believe families should understand their options clearly before making a decision.

🙏 Why Are There So Many Different Paper Offerings During the Seventh Lunar Month?

During the Seventh Lunar Month, you may notice families burning many different types of paper offerings. Each item carries its own symbolic meaning and purpose.

🔥 Gold and silver joss paper
Symbolises wealth and blessings for ancestors and wandering spirits in the afterlife.

👕 Paper clothing and personal items
Offered to provide comfort and necessities, just as we would care for our loved ones when they were alive.

🏠 Paper houses, vehicles and household items
Represent shelter, convenience and a comfortable life in the spiritual world.

💵 Paper money
A symbolic form of currency offered for the departed to use in the afterlife.

🍚 Food and everyday necessities
Express care, hospitality and remembrance—ensuring that both ancestors and wandering spirits are respectfully provided for.

The variety of offerings may differ according to family traditions, dialect groups and religious beliefs. However, their meaning is often the same: to remember our ancestors, show gratitude and extend compassion to spirits who may have no one to pray for them.

Ultimately, it is not about how much we burn or how elaborate the offerings are. What matters most is the sincerity, respect and intention behind every prayer. 🙏

🏮 Why Do We Pray During the Hungry Ghost Festival?
为什么农历七月要祭拜?🏮

The Hungry Ghost Festival, also known as Zhong Yuan Festival (中元节), is observed during the seventh lunar month. It is believed that during this period, the gates of the spiritual realm open, allowing departed souls to visit the living world.

But praying during this period is not simply about fear or avoiding bad luck. It carries deeper meanings of remembrance, gratitude and compassion.

🙏 1. To Honour and Remember Our Ancestors
祭拜祖先,慎终追远

We prepare prayers and offerings to remember our departed family members and express our gratitude for the lives, sacrifices and values they passed down to us.

Even though they are no longer physically with us, they continue to hold an important place in our hearts and family.

🙏 2. To Show Filial Piety
表达孝心,延续亲情

Filial piety does not end when a loved one passes away. Through prayer, families continue to show their love, respect and appreciation for their ancestors.

It is also a meaningful opportunity for younger generations to learn about their family history and understand the importance of remembering their roots.

🙏 3. To Offer Compassion to Wandering Spirits
布施孤魂,传递慈悲

Some departed souls may have no family members to remember them or make offerings on their behalf.

Offering food, incense and prayers is therefore an act of kindness and compassion—wishing that these wandering spirits may receive comfort, find peace and move on without suffering.

🙏 4. To Express Gratitude
感恩先人,珍惜当下

The festival reminds us that the life we enjoy today was made possible by the efforts and sacrifices of those who came before us.

By remembering them, we learn to appreciate our blessings, treasure our loved ones and live each day with greater gratitude.

🙏 5. To Pray for Peace and Protection
祈愿平安,家庭和顺

Families may also pray for peace, good health and harmony. These prayers are not only requests for blessings but also sincere wishes for both the departed and the living to be safe and at peace.

🙏 6. To Preserve Our Traditions
传承文化,不忘根本

The Hungry Ghost Festival is an important part of Chinese culture and tradition. By observing it respectfully, we preserve meaningful customs and pass their values on to the next generation.

The way each family prays may be different, but sincerity and respect are always the most important.

🙏 7. To Reflect on Life
提醒无常,珍惜眼前人

This period reminds us that life is temporary. It encourages us to treat others with kindness, resolve misunderstandings and cherish the people who are still beside us.

We pray not merely because we fear the unknown, but because we remember those who came before us, care for those who may have been forgotten, and treasure the relationships we still have today.

May every sincere offering bring comfort.
May every departed soul find peace.
May every family be blessed with safety, harmony and good health.

愿先人安息,孤魂得度,生者平安,家宅和顺。🙏

We are not the cheapest funeral company in Singapore, and we’re not the most expensive either.

Our focus has always been simple: provide genuine value, transparent pricing, and guide families through one of the hardest moments of their lives.

When a loved one passes on, the difference isn’t the price tag. It’s the people standing beside you when you need help the most.

Affinity by chance, service by heart. ❤️

“Void deck funerals may soon become a thing of the past.”

For decades, void decks have been where families, neighbours, and communities came together to say their final goodbye. But with changing policies, land use, and housing developments, are we slowly losing this tradition?

If void decks are no longer available, should families be forced to pay more for funeral parlours and private venues?

Will this create a situation where a dignified farewell depends on how much you can afford?

What do you think — is this progress, or are we losing an important part of Singapore’s funeral culture?
