🏮 Why Do We Pray During the Hungry Ghost Festival?
The Hungry Ghost Festival, also known as Zhong Yuan Festival (中元节), is observed during the seventh lunar month. It is believed that during this period, the gates of the spiritual realm open, allowing departed souls to visit the living world.
But praying during this period is not simply about fear or avoiding bad luck. It carries deeper meanings of remembrance, gratitude and compassion.
🙏 1. To Honour and Remember Our Ancestors
We prepare prayers and offerings to remember our departed family members and express our gratitude for the lives, sacrifices and values they passed down to us.
Even though they are no longer physically with us, they continue to hold an important place in our hearts and family.
🙏 2. To Show Filial Piety
Filial piety does not end when a loved one passes away. Through prayer, families continue to show their love, respect and appreciation for their ancestors.
It is also a meaningful opportunity for younger generations to learn about their family history and understand the importance of remembering their roots.
🙏 3. To Offer Compassion to Wandering Spirits
Some departed souls may have no family members to remember them or make offerings on their behalf.
Offering food, incense and prayers is therefore an act of kindness and compassion—wishing that these wandering spirits may receive comfort, find peace and move on without suffering.
🙏 4. To Express Gratitude
The festival reminds us that the life we enjoy today was made possible by the efforts and sacrifices of those who came before us.
By remembering them, we learn to appreciate our blessings, treasure our loved ones and live each day with greater gratitude.
🙏 5. To Pray for Peace and Protection
Families may also pray for peace, good health and harmony. These prayers are not only requests for blessings but also sincere wishes for both the departed and the living to be safe and at peace.
🙏 6. To Preserve Our Traditions
The Hungry Ghost Festival is an important part of Chinese culture and tradition. By observing it respectfully, we preserve meaningful customs and pass their values on to the next generation.
The way each family prays may be different, but sincerity and respect are always the most important.
🙏 7. To Reflect on Life
This period reminds us that life is temporary. It encourages us to treat others with kindness, resolve misunderstandings and cherish the people who are still beside us.
We pray not merely because we fear the unknown, but because we remember those who came before us, care for those who may have been forgotten, and treasure the relationships we still have today.
May every sincere offering bring comfort.
May every departed soul find peace.
May every family be blessed with safety, harmony and good health.
