Heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest are often confused, but understanding the difference is important.

A heart attack is a circulation problem caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle. Sudden cardiac arrest is an electrical problem that causes the heart to stop pumping blood effectively.

Recognising these differences can help you respond appropriately in an emergency.

Most people have heard of a heart attack, but fewer understand sudden cardiac arrest or know how to respond when it happens.

Sudden cardiac arrest is a medical emergency where every minute counts. Recognising the signs, calling 𝟗𝟗𝟓, starting CPR, and using an AED as soon as possible can make a critical difference while waiting for emergency medical services.

This Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, take a few minutes to learn the steps. One day, that knowledge could help you save a life.

Atrial fibrillation is one of the most common heart rhythm disorders, but treatment is not the same for everyone.

Management is tailored to your symptoms, medical history, and overall risk profile. In addition to improving symptoms, treatment also focuses on reducing the risk of complications such as stroke.

Understanding your treatment options is an important part of living well with atrial fibrillation.

Not every heart rhythm disorder feels the same.

Some cause the heart to beat too fast, others too slowly, while some lead to an irregular rhythm. Recognising these differences can help you understand when symptoms may need medical attention.

If you experience persistent palpitations, dizziness, fainting, or unexplained breathlessness, seek medical assessment to determine the underlying cause.

Before your heart pumps blood, it first needs an electrical signal.

That signal begins in the sinoatrial (SA) node, a specialised group of cells that acts as your heart's natural pacemaker by generating the electrical impulse that starts every heartbeat.

Understanding how this system works makes it easier to appreciate what happens when heart rhythm disorders develop.

Most people know the heart pumps blood. Fewer realise that every heartbeat begins with an electrical signal.

This electrical system keeps your heart beating in a coordinated rhythm. When it is disrupted, heart rhythm disorders may develop, causing the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or irregularly.

Some rhythm disorders may produce noticeable symptoms, while others can remain silent until complications occur. Understanding how your heart's electrical system works is the first step towards recognising when something may not be right.

This Heart Rhythm Awareness Month, learn more about the hidden system that keeps every heartbeat in sync.

Getting to know the specialists behind heart rhythm care. ❤️

We are pleased to share this feature of Dr Devinder Singh, Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist, as part of IHH Healthcare Singapore’s introduction to its electrophysiologists.

As a cardiac electrophysiologist, Dr Devinder focuses on the diagnosis and management of heart rhythm conditions, helping patients better understand what may be behind an irregular, unusually fast or slow heartbeat.

Thank you to the IHH Healthcare Singapore team for putting together this feature and for the opportunity to be part of the series highlighting the work of electrophysiologists in heart rhythm care.

Every athlete has their training essentials.

For me, they include my running shoes, smartwatch, hydration, and nutrition. But as a Cardiac Electrophysiologist, there is one thing I think about before packing any of these:

Is my heart ready?

High intensity training places greater demands on your cardiovascular system. While the right equipment can support your performance, understanding your heart health is just as important.

Knowing your blood pressure, recognising warning symptoms, and understanding your cardiovascular risk factors can help you prepare more confidently for your next training session.

Because before you invest in your next piece of gear, it is worth investing time in understanding your heart.

High intensity training has taught me that preparing for performance goes beyond building strength and endurance.

As a Cardiac Electrophysiologist and someone who enjoys high intensity training, I have come to appreciate that understanding your heart is just as important as challenging it.

Most of us focus on improving our speed, strength, or recovery. Equally important is recognising what a normal response to exercise looks like, knowing when symptoms may need medical attention, and understanding your own cardiovascular health before pushing your limits.

A strong body starts with a healthy heart, and the best performance comes from training smart as well as training hard.
