One of the biggest reasons I evolved as a coach came from a brutal stretch of setbacks.
The first gym I was a shareholder in closed in 2019. We too slow to adapt, too reliant on an overseas franchise that eventually pulled the rug from under us. I had to scramble just to keep my sessions going.
Then came the feedback:
“I don’t know what he’s teaching.”
“He’s undeserving.”
That hit hard. Especially when I knew how much thought I put into every class.
Before I could regroup, COVID hit. I have no time to even cry about it.
It felt like everything was collapsing at once.
But something shifted.
Instead of shutting down, I adapted. I went back to outdoor training (where I first started), organised sessions before restrictions were even announced, and moved quickly into virtual classes.
That period forced me to confront everything. My blind spots, my ego, my limits.
And somewhere along the way, I changed.
I became more adaptable than I ever thought I could be.
I learned to see the bigger picture.
I let go of blame, and chose growth instead.
People say when we ask for strength, life gives us difficulties.
When we ask for wisdom, it gives us problems to solve.
Looking back, I got both and more
And I’m grateful for every part of it. Today I am hoping to pass these lessons to the next generation, as much as I can.
