A follow-up from the inaugural ST Forum Live event, now covered in today's edition of The Straits Times...

I was grateful to have had the opportunity to ask about how Singapore can better recognise and deploy the different skills citizens bring to National Service, including medical and professional expertise.

It was encouraging to hear Minister Chan Chun Sing speak about the refreshed medical classification system and the importance of moving beyond broad labels towards more meaningful ways for Singaporeans to contribute.

Honoured to have been invited to the very first ST Forum Live event, hosted by The Straits Times.

It was a meaningful and thought-provoking conversation with Minister Chan Chun Sing on National Service, Singapore’s security, and how we prepare for an uncertain future shaped by new technologies, cyber threats and changing forms of conflict.

As a doctor, NSman and Singaporean, I was grateful for the opportunity to listen, reflect and ask questions on how we can better recognise and deploy the different skills Singaporeans bring to national defence.

Thank you to The Straits Times Forum team for organising this inaugural session, and to Minister Chan for the candid and engaging discussion. It was also a pleasure to meet members of The Straits Times editorial team, including Mr Jaime Ho and Ms Audrey Quek.

A news story recently reported how three emergency doctors helped save a passenger who suffered cardiac arrest on a Singapore Airlines flight.

It reminded me of something that happened to me about 13 years ago.

I was leaving the gym after a workout and shower when a man suddenly collapsed. By coincidence, there were two other doctors and a nurse exercising there that day as well. Someone brought over the AED, and I delivered the shock. Thankfully, his heart rhythm returned.

What stayed with me all these years was not the drama of the moment, but how preparedness and teamwork made the difference. AEDs were already present in many public places then, but they were far less commonly used and many people were still hesitant about stepping forward.

In obstetrics we sometimes remind ourselves of a similar principle when emergencies happen in pregnancy. People understandably panic when a pregnant woman collapses. But the fundamentals remain the same: save the mother first. When the mother is stabilised, the baby’s best chance is preserved too.

Whether it’s on a plane, in a gym, or in a maternity ward, those first few minutes matter.
Sometimes it simply takes someone willing to step forward and act.

Still doing multiple finger pricks a day for GDM monitoring?
Finger prick testing remains important, but it only gives readings at a few time points. For some mothers, CGM can provide a clearer view of glucose patterns throughout the day and night, including meal spikes and overnight trends.

At our clinic, we have experience using CGM in pregnancy and can advise whether it may be suitable in selected cases.
