🎭 “Social skills aren’t taught by worksheets—they’re learned in real interactions.”

Children learn social understanding through meaningful back-and-forth experiences:
✨ taking another person’s perspective
✨ thinking flexibly
✨ problem-solving
✨ planning ideas together
✨ navigating emotions and surprises

At Speech Therapy Adventures, we use pretend play and relationship-based interactions to help children build these important life skills in ways that feel natural, engaging, and meaningful.

Because true social growth doesn’t happen from memorising scripts — it happens through connection, shared experiences, and learning how to think with another person. 💛

🎧 “Hearing louder doesn’t always mean hearing more clearly.”

Many adults with hearing loss tell us:
“I can hear people talking… but I still can’t understand what they’re saying.”

Even with hearing aids or cochlear implants, conversations can still feel exhausting — especially in noisy environments, group settings, or fast conversations.

At Speech Therapy Adventures, we focus on improving speech clarity and real-life listening skills, not just volume. We also work closely with audiologists to support better communication outcomes and reduce listening fatigue.

Clear communication can make such a difference in confidence, relationships, work, and daily life. đź’›

🎧 Did you know early support for hearing loss can make a huge difference in a child’s speech, language, confidence, and future communication skills?

Many parents believe hearing aids or cochlear implants alone will solve everything — but children can still miss important speech sounds, grammar markers, or struggle to advocate for themselves socially and academically.

At Speech Therapy Adventures, we specialise in supporting children with hearing loss through personalised, play-based therapy that builds communication confidence step by step. đź’›

Every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident communicator.

I recently had the opportunity to present on “Integrating Discipline-Specific Goals within Transdisciplinary DIRFloortime.” At the heart of our message was this: when we reach a high level of mastery in our own discipline, we naturally start to think and work in more transdisciplinary ways so that we can truly meet the child where they are developmentally, rather than working in parallel silos.

We highlighted that being transdisciplinary is not about “doing it all” or accepting a compromise in therapeutic standards. Instead, it sharpens our observation, clarifies when and why we refer to colleagues, and helps the whole team align around a shared developmental roadmap for the child. This is how we move toward genuinely holistic outcomes.

The response was very encouraging. Teams that are already deeply transdisciplinary, such as Rebecca School, shared that the talk validated their lived experience, and many attendees appreciated the practical strategies and video examples that showed what this can look like in real practice.

Over the past few days in New Jersey, We have tried almost every mode of public transport to get from place to place — interstate Amtrak, local light rail, PATH, NJ Transit trains, and even the most “mind-boggling” of all, the buses across different states. It has been both challenging and incredibly liberating to figure out how everything connects and to be able to move around freely just by understanding the system.

This made me think about many of the wonderfully visual, strongly neurodivergent individuals I’ve met who are absolute experts in public transport systems. I can now better understand why they treasure this “special power” so much and why they can talk about routes, maps, and schedules for hours. There is a real charm and dignity in being able to navigate the world independently — one train, one bus, and one connection at a time.

Why is language important for literacy development?

Language is the foundation for learning to read, write, understand, and express ideas. When children develop strong listening, comprehension, vocabulary, and expressive language skills, they are better prepared for literacy learning later on.

In this short video, Naomi and Kerensa share why language development matters and what parents should look out for in the early years.

Save this post if you’re supporting a late talker or a child with communication needs.

Just completed the CLASI – Ayres Sensory Integration® course!

Such a fun, energising class. So thankful for an OT (Emily Koh) who guided me through the trickier SI concepts — teamwork really makes learning richer.

And… a proud moment when our trainer, Elizabeth, President of ICEASI, said she was impressed with my SI knowledge as a speech therapist. Definitely one of those “hard work pays off” moments.

Feeling proud and very grateful đź’›

It was a pleasure spending the morning at Odyssey Dempsey speaking with parents about speech and language development in the early years.

We explored:

What the difference is between speech and language

What key developmental milestones typically look like

And how children build communication skills through everyday interactions, play, and connection

I always enjoy these conversations with parents—because behind every question is a genuine desire to understand and support their child better.

I’m really looking forward to returning on 1 April for our next session, where we’ll focus on social-emotional development, communication beyond words, and the role of play in helping children grow—one of my favourite topics to speak about.

Thank you, Odyssey Dempsey, for the warm welcome and thoughtful engagement today. It’s always a joy working with schools that value the whole child 💚
