Many women in midlife tell me that they find restaurants exhausting, conversations harder to follow, or tinnitus more noticeable.

Often they assume it’s stress, burnout, or simply “getting older”.

But the auditory system appears to be influenced by hormones too.

Check out my article in Hearing Practitioner Australia exploring the fascinating and emerging research into hormones, hearing, tinnitus, and menopause — and why hearing health deserves a place in the wider conversation around healthy ageing and women’s health.

ENT surgeon DR REBECCA HEYWOOD explains what happens to hormones and hearing during the menopausal transition and examines whether hormone replacement therapy can protect hearing.

The chatter of 50 people in a large, high-ceilinged room.

On most days, that wouldn’t seem remarkable.

But on Saturday it was.

Many of the people in that room had . Before their surgery, following a conversation in that environment would have been almost impossible.

On Saturday, as we celebrated , I met several patients whom I implanted when I first came to Singapore more than a decade ago.

Their stories shared a common theme: their lives had changed immeasurably.

They spoke about confidence — how they used to feel quiet or withdrawn and now participate fully in life.

New jobs.
New hobbies.
Travelling.
Phone calls to loved ones.
Listening to grandkids.

One woman smiled and said she now feels like “Superwoman.” 🦸‍♀️

This transformation took courage. Surgery and the idea of an implant felt daunting to most, and afterwards comes the work of rehabilitation — learning to hear in a completely new way.

I was beyond delighted to see them!! ❤️

Hearing is about so much more than sound. That room was full of connection!

Did you know that there are oestrogen and progesterone receptors in the inner ear and central auditory pathways? When oestrogen declines, hearing can too.

There is a great deal of discussion at the moment about and — how we can delay ageing, prolong our healthspan and maintain high functionality.

Hearing needs to be part of that conversation.

I recently spoke on The Forties Formula about what every woman should understand about the link between hearing and brain health.

Today is 👂✨

We’re talking more than ever about and .

Hearing should be part of that conversation!

If you’re struggling to catch what people say in noisy places, listening is becoming hard work, or you notice ringing in your ears — it may not be “just ageing.”

I shared what every woman should know about hearing (and yes, most of it applies to men too) on the .
