As caregivers, it can be worrying to wonder:
β€œWhat’s next for my special needs child as they grow older?”

Many neurodivergent teens and adults need more than just care, they need a safe, structured space to keep learning, practising, and building confidence for everyday life.

A Kind Place’s Independent Adult Programme supports learners in developing communication, emotional skills, social skills, daily living, real-life skills, and self-regulation at their own pace.

With weekday sessions at Ang Mo Kio and Leng Kee CC, we walk alongside each learner and family β€” one kind step at a time. πŸ’™

This is episode 6 of Supporting Big Emotions with Small Intentions πŸ’›

Have you ever felt like you've explained something clearly, but your child still doesn't seem to follow through?

It's easy to think we need to repeat ourselves, add more details, or explain it differently.

But sometimes, the challenge isn't what we're saying, it's how much we're saying.

Long explanations, multiple instructions, and repeated reminders can create verbal overload, making it harder for children to process and respond.

Instead, try breaking instructions into one simple step at a time. Slow down, pause, and use gestures or visual cues where possible.

Small intention: reduce verbal load and increase clarity.

Here is Episode 5 of π‘Ίπ’–π’‘π’‘π’π’“π’•π’Šπ’π’ˆ π‘©π’Šπ’ˆ π‘¬π’Žπ’π’•π’Šπ’π’π’” π’˜π’Šπ’•π’‰ π‘Ίπ’Žπ’‚π’π’ π‘°π’π’•π’†π’π’•π’Šπ’π’π’”, where we share small tips and strategies to better support your special needs child!

When our child is having a meltdown, our instinct is often to follow closely, ask questions, or try to make things better immediately.

After all, we're worried.

But sometimes, what a child needs most is not more words or more attention - but space to regulate, while knowing we're still there.

Giving respectful distance doesn't mean leaving them alone. It means staying present without adding pressure.

Small intention: stay nearby, not over them.

This is Episode 4 of our Supporting Big Emotions with Small Intentions series.

Ever wonder why your child says "no" to everything?

Sometimes, resistance isn't about refusing to cooperate, it's about wanting a sense of control.
When children are given simple, structured choices, they often feel more empowered, engaged, and willing to participate.

Small changes in how we communicate can make a big difference in how children respond.

Follow along for Day 5 tomorrow, and stay tuned for our upcoming Holiday Programme designed to support growth, connection, and meaningful learning through the school break. ✨

This is Episode 3 of π‘Ίπ’–π’‘π’‘π’π’“π’•π’Šπ’π’ˆ π‘©π’Šπ’ˆ π‘¬π’Žπ’π’•π’Šπ’π’π’” π’˜π’Šπ’•π’‰ π‘Ίπ’Žπ’‚π’π’ π‘°π’π’•π’†π’π’•π’Šπ’π’π’”!

When a child is upset, it’s easy to focus on the behaviour we see β€” the crying, shouting, or frustration.

But sometimes, what they need first is to feel understood.

Instead of asking, β€œWhy are you so angry over such a small thing?”, try noticing the struggle behind the reaction:
β€œLooks like you’re having a hard time with that. Would you like me to help?”

Small intention: acknowledge the feeling before correcting the behaviour.

Welcome back to our special needs series of π‘Ίπ’–π’‘π’‘π’π’“π’•π’Šπ’π’ˆ π‘©π’Šπ’ˆ π‘¬π’Žπ’π’•π’Šπ’π’π’” π’˜π’Šπ’•π’‰ π‘Ίπ’Žπ’‚π’π’ π‘°π’π’•π’†π’π’•π’Šπ’π’π’”, where we share small tips and strategies to better support your special needs child.

In Episode 2:
The way we speak to children matters more than we realise. Sometimes, even with good intentions, certain tones or phrases can feel dismissive or infantilising.

Using calm, respectful language helps children feel safe, valued, and understood.

Small intention: dignity through communication.

If this resonates with you, follow for Episode 3!

What would independence look like for your child in everyday life? πŸ’

For many parents, it starts with small but meaningful moments, being able to express what they need, stay calm when things feel overwhelming, connect with others, and move through daily routines with more confidence.

That’s exactly what our Independent Adult Programme is designed to support.

For individuals aged 18+ with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Intellectual Disability, we provide structured, guided sessions that focus on building real-life independence through communication, emotional, social, and daily living skills.

A safe space where growth is supported step by step, at each individual’s pace 🌱
