Caregiving can sometimes feel like you’re constantly bracing for what comes next.

What if things get worse? What if I can’t cope? What happens when I have to make the difficult decisions?

Yasmeen shares how constantly anticipating what might happen next can affect her mental wellbeing, and what she has learnt about managing those worries along the way.

What does it mean to provide the right care at the right time and in the right setting? And how do we transform care to improve outcomes for patients, while delivering care in a way that is effective, coordinated and sustainable?

These were some of the themes explored at our inaugural IMH Value Festival on 15 September, where patients, caregivers and clinicians came together to reflect on what value in mental healthcare looks like in practice.

We were honoured to have Prof Sally Lewis, founder of Kintsugi International, share her insights on person-centred care, followed by a candid dialogue with our panelists.

The festival also marked World Patient Safety Day, 17 September, a reminder that safety and value are inseparable. As our Chairman, Medical Board, A/Prof Swapna Kamal Verma, shared β€œDelivering value in healthcare not only is about achieving good outcomes, but ensuring that the care we provide is safe and reliable. Patient safety is a foundation of value-based care.” πŸ’™

The world often moves at its own rhythm. For Ms Lim*, keeping pace can sometimes be challenging due to her mental health condition.

The Joy Club Drum Circle, funded by the Woodbridge Hospital Charity Fund, shifts something in her. Beat by beat, she stays in sync with the rest of her drumming circle.

"Drumming helps me concentrate," she shares, "I also like to perform," she adds cheekily.

For her, the drum circle is more than just music and instruments. It is her momentum. It is what keeps her going. Your donation helps each heart find its beat. Each contribution supports programmes that restore confidence, build community, and remind our patients that they have something to look forward to and be part of.

Fifteen years ago, Nyan Lin arrived at IMH as a fresh nursing scholar. Today, he is one of the people shaping the next generation of psychiatric nurses.

Nyan Lin has spent his career across IMH's acute and recovery wards, and took on the Clinical Instructor role in 2024. Before his students set foot in the ward, he briefs them and checks in on how they are feeling. When a student has a difficult day, he pulls them aside, lets them talk it out, and works through it with them: what happened, what they could do differently, and what they can take forward.

That same care and attention to his students' psychological wellbeing is something he hopes will stay with them. By showing them what it means to listen and respond to someone else's needs, he teaches them what it means to care beyond the clinical.

Every conversation with a patient matters. As he puts it, they are doing wound dressing, just on wounds that cannot be seen.

Nyan Lin was mentored by Abu Shah and Singa, two of this year's other Star Teachers Award recipients. In July, he joined his former mentors in receiving IMH's inaugural Star Teachers Award at our Nurses' Day celebrations. Congratulations, Nyan Lin!

Many people avoid reaching out because they're afraid of saying the wrong thing. The truth is, you don't need the perfect words. What often matters most is knowing someone cares enough to show up, listen and stay present.

Sometimes a simple, "I'm here for you," or "Would you like to talk?" can remind someone they don't have to navigate their grief alone.

Abu Shah Bin Surati has spent 40 years at IMH, including the last 20 as a Clinical Instructor. In that time, he has mentored over 2,000 nursing students. This year, he was one of the inaugural recipients of IMH’s Star Teachers Award at our Nurses’ Day celebrations.

For Mr Abu Shah, teaching goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. He meets students where they are, using relatable examples to help them understand what patients may be experiencing.

To help students understand what an auditory hallucination might feel like, for example, he asks them to imagine having a parent constantly nagging them, with no way to walk away. It’s an analogy that helps turn a clinical concept into something students can picture and understand.

His lessons go beyond the clinical too. He checks in on how his students are doing, not just how they are performing. One former student went on to become a nurse at IMH, then a Clinical Instructor, and this year, received the same Star Teachers Award as Mr Abu Shah.

From teaching students to inspiring teachers, his influence has come full circle. Kudos to a teacher who continues to shape the nurses of tomorrow!

Your 30s can look like you have it all figured out. But behind the milestones and responsibilities, someone may be struggling.

According to Samaritans of Singapore, su***de was the second leading cause of death among adults aged 30 to 39 in 2024.

Career, financial, relationship and caregiving pressures can sometimes feel overwhelming. Look beyond appearances. If someone seems withdrawn or overwhelmed, check in: β€œHow are you, really?” Then take the time to listen.

Su***de doesn't just affect one person. Its impact can be felt by family members, friends, colleagues, classmates and entire communities.

For those left behind, grief can come with sadness, guilt, confusion, anger and unanswered questions. There is no right or wrong way to feel after losing someone to su***de.

If someone you know is grieving, don't underestimate the power of simply being there. A message, a phone call or a quiet check-in can remind them they don't have to carry their grief alone.
