🛑 Stop! That heel pain might NOT be Plantar Fasciitis! 🦶💥

Most of us assume any sharp pain at the bottom of our foot is just plantar fasciitis. But did you know your heel pain could actually be coming from the heel bone itself?

It could be a condition called Calcaneal Periostitis (heel bone inflammation)—meaning the issue is a lot more complex than just a single structure in your foot.

Here is the catch: If you assume it's plantar fasciitis, common "remedies" like deep tissue massage or rushing out to buy a new pair of shoes in the wrong category can actually AGGRAVATE the inflammation and make your pain so much worse! 😱👟❌

Don't let incorrect treatments set back your recovery. Discover the hidden structures in your foot, what heel bone inflammation really means, and why getting the right diagnosis is critical to walking pain-free again.

Learn how calcaneal periostitis, bone stress and inflammation of the heel bone can cause heel pain, how it is diagnosed and how footwear may help.

Can a small difference in leg length really matter?

A small difference may be harmless in one person, but clinically important in another — especially when it contributes to:

• One-sided foot, knee, hip or back pain
• Uneven shoe wear
• Recurrent overuse injuries
• Pelvic tilt or a feeling of standing “crooked”
• Asymmetrical walking or running patterns
• Heel pain, forefoot pressure or tendon overload

The key question is not only:
“How many millimetres is the difference?”

The better question is:
“Is this difference changing how the body loads, moves and compensates?”

At Family Podiatry Centre, we assess leg length discrepancy as part of the full lower-limb picture, including posture, gait, footwear, pressure loading and foot mechanics.

In our latest article, we explain why even small differences can matter, when heel lifts or custom insoles may help, and why self-prescribing a heel lift without proper assessment can sometimes make things worse.

Think that thick yellow toenail is definitely a fungal nail?

Not always.

Thick toenails — medically known as onychauxia or onychauxis — can be caused by fungus, but they can also be caused by a range of other things.

That is why treating a nail with anti-fungal protocols for month on end without testing it first can waste time and money.

In our latest article, we take a detailed look at:

• Nail anatomy
• Why toenails become thick and hard
• The difference between onychauxia and fungal nails
• When a thick nail may be caused by pressure or trauma
• Why diabetic and high-risk feet need extra care
• When a thick nail should be checked properly
• Treatment options from a podiatry perspective

If you or someone in your family has a thick, painful, yellow, curved or difficult-to-cut toenail, this article is worth reading.

Onychauxia, also called onychauxis, is abnormal thickening of the nail plate. Learn why toenails become thick, yellow, painful or difficult to cut, and why not every thick nail is fungal.

Did you know that an ingrown toenail is not always a nail that simply grows the wrong way. It is often a pressure problem. The nail edge, the skin beside the nail, the shoe, the shape of the toe and the way the big toe loads during walking all interact. When those forces repeatedly squeeze the skin against the nail, the area becomes inflamed and painful. There are a few options to manage ingrown toenails but it all depends on the underlying cause.

Flat feet are often explained too simply — but foot function is far more complex than just having a “low arch.”

Our latest article explores a talus-centred approach to understanding flexible flat feet, how pressure mapping can help assess foot function, and why properly prescribed custom orthotics are very different from over-the-counter online or shopping mall insoles.

Learn how modern podiatry can look beyond the arch and focus on how the foot actually works.

Most people buy running shoes based on aesthetics. Whether you are buying a pair for running, walking or casual wear, you need to be aware that there are mainly 2 types. Neutral shoes and stability shoes. If you select the incorrect one, you may be setting yourself up for injury.
