Asian skin is generally more sensitive compared to Caucasian skin, this is due to genetics. It makes us more prone to hyperpigmentation and retinoid dermatitis. I started the dermocosmetic line back in 2016 for my dermatology practice in Singapore, primarily as a holistic alternative to retinoids for my patients who were struggling with skin sensitivity and reactivity.

The key was to deliver the collagen-stimulating benefits without irritation, reduce inflammation and also improve the antioxidant capacity of skin. We worked on developing methionine, an essential sulfur based amino acid for wound healing and collagen regeneration.

My research ultimately led me to the texts of the Imperial apothecaries of the East, from the UNESCO-inscribed Dongui Bogam of Hanbang, to the Huangdi Neijing and the Ishinpo, where I began to uncover the wisdom of the ancients through the modern lens of dermatology.

When I started on this journey, I truly believed that I was on a quest to halt time to reverse the superficial signs of aging, wrinkles, dark spots. But more than a decade later, what I’ve learnt is that aging goes much deeper than surface wrinkles, it lives in the heart of our cells, the mitochondria, it’s also in the mind, what is now known as the brain-skin connection, it’s in the gut, which affects our microbiome. And I’ve made it my mission to restore this holistic art to the science of skincare.
