Cataract or glaucoma? They may both affect your vision, but they are two very different eye conditions.

Cataract occurs when the clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy, preventing light from entering the eye properly and causing blurred or hazy vision.

Glaucoma, on the other hand, damages the optic nerve, typically due to fluid build-up in the front of the eye that increases eye pressure, causing progressive vision loss that cannot be reversed.

While both conditions can become more common with age, their causes, symptoms and treatment differ. Consulting an ophthalmologist allows for a comprehensive eye examination to accurately diagnose the underlying condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your needs.

If you are above 40 and have started experiencing changes in your vision, consult an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye examination. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

Strabismus, or misaligned eyes, is more than an appearance issue. Left untreated, it can affect how a child's vision develops during the critical early years.

As the brain relies more on the stronger eye, it may suppress the image from the misaligned eye. Over time, this can lead to amblyopia (lazy eye), poor depth perception, eyestrain and reduced peripheral vision.

Early diagnosis of strabismus is crucial for effective management and treatment. When treated early, strabismus can be corrected to improve eye alignment and visual function, and avoid complications.

In mild cases, prescribed glasses, eye patches or specific eye exercises can help strengthen the affected eye and treat the refractive error. For more serious cases, surgery may be considered to correct the misalignment.

If your child displays signs of misaligned eyes, frequent squinting, and unusual head tilting, call ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ for a strabismus assessment with our trained paediatric ophthalmologist.

Dry eye disease can occur and make the eyes prone to damage and infection when the tear layer that lubricates the eyeballs is inadequate.

While the condition is often associated with adults, dry eye disease can affect children too. Increased screen time, certain medications and underlying medical conditions can all contribute to insufficient tear production, resulting in pain, blurred vision and a burning sensation in the eyes.

Should these symptoms occur, dry eye disease can be managed with healthy lifestyle changes and prescription medications to relieve symptoms and restore normal tear production.

If you or your child is experiencing symptoms and suspect dry eye disease, see an ophthalmologist for a detailed eye examination. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease that damages the optic nerve, usually as a result of increased eye pressure from fluid buildup in the eye.

Often called the "silent thief of sight", glaucoma is particularly concerning as symptoms often do not appear until the disease has advanced. By the time vision changes become apparent, permanent damage may already have occurred.

As vision loss from glaucoma cannot be reversed, early detection and treatment are essential in slowing disease progression and preserving sight.

If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned, reach out for a detailed assessment of your vision with an ophthalmologist. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

While LASIK has helped many achieve clear vision, it may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with high myopia or thin corneas. Regular contact lenses and spectacles, on the other hand, require daily maintenance and can sometimes cause discomfort with prolonged wear.

The ๐—œ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€ (๐—œ๐—–๐—Ÿ) serve as an effective alternative for vision correction, where artificial lenses are surgically implanted between the iris and the natural lens to restore clear vision.

Made of collamer, a biocompatible material that is well tolerated by the eye, ICL has no adverse reactions to the eye and minimises the risk of dry eye syndrome, a common side effect of LASIK.

The ICL is also reversible, fuss-free and needs no special maintenance, unlike typical contact lenses which require daily rinsing, storing and re-insertion.

With childhood myopia becoming increasingly common, encouraging healthy eye care habits from a young age can go a long way in supporting your child's eye development.

๐——๐—ฟ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ผ ๐—ฆ๐—ฒ๐—ผ ๐—ช๐—ฒ๐—ถ advises parents to encourage their children to spend more time outdoors, as regular exposure to natural light may help delay the onset or progression of myopia.

At the same time, children should also take regular breaks from prolonged near work, and ensure adequate lighting and appropriate viewing distance when doing near work.

As myopia often develops during the school-going years, early detection is equally important. Regular eye examinations can help identify vision changes early and allow timely intervention to safeguard your child's vision.

If you are concerned about your child's risk of developing myopia, seek advice from Dr Leo Seo Wei, paediatric ophthalmologist with over 25 years of experience. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

Manifesting as dark spots and blurriness in the centre of oneโ€™s vision, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye condition caused by damage to the central part of the retina (macula).

While factors such as age and family history can increase risk, healthy lifestyle modifications may help prevent or delay its onset.

If AMD does occur, depending on its severity and type, targeted treatments such as intravitreal injections, photodynamic therapy or nutritional supplements can help stabilise vision, slow disease progression and preserve eyesight.

If you notice symptoms such as black spots, distorted and blurred central vision, consult an ophthalmologist for a detailed eye assessment today. ๐Ÿ“ž๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ

Routine eye screenings play an important role in the early detection and prevention of vision-threatening conditions such as glaucoma, myopia, and cataracts.

As many eye conditions do not present obvious symptoms in their early stages, regular eye examinations are essential for detecting potential issues before irreversible vision damage occurs.

For adults aged 18โ€“60 with no history of vision issues, a comprehensive eye screening is recommended every two years. Individuals aged 60 years and above, or with a family history of eye conditions, or past eye infections are encouraged to undergo annual screenings.

Children should undergo a comprehensive eye screening before starting school, followed by routine eye examinations every one to two years.
