The United Bardo Deliverance Ceremony of Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism and Japanese Shingon Esoteric Buddhism
July 18 was a truly extraordinary and unforgettable day.
At the annual Deliverance Ceremony organized by Baolun Temple, Singapore, history was made with the first-ever joint Deliverance Dharma Assembly uniting Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism (Vajrayāna) and Japanese Shingon Esoteric Buddhism in harmonious practice.
The ceremony was presided over by Khenpo Rinchen. It was a rare and auspicious occasion, with eminent masters from Japan's two principal Shingon head temples and distinguished Buddhist teachers from across Asia gathering to support this sacred event. Among them were Rev.Imagawa Taishn,Director General of Kongobu-ji, the Head Temple of Koyasan Shingon Buddhism; Rev. Obayashi Jitsuon, Director General of Ninna-ji, Head Temple; Muta Seiju ; Director of General Affairs of Ninna-ji Head Temple; Acharya Sheng Dao, Chief Priest of Dale-ji, Temple; Khenpo Sherab of Bhutan; and from the Malaysian Shingon Pumen School Associat, Acharya Yudao, Acharya Wenyu, and Acharya Miaoxiu. Together, they helped bring this rare and magnificent Dharma assembly to fruition.
The entire mandala was solemn and magnificent. Sacred thangkas of the Eight Manifestations of Guru Padmasambhava stood prominently, paintings of the Thirteen Buddhas adorned the altar, hundreds of Seven-Star Lamps illuminated the hall, and countless memorial tablets for the departed formed a sea of flowers throughout the sacred space. The breathtaking setting immersed everyone in the sublime beauty of Buddhist art and devotion, as though they had entered a Pure Land.
As the ceremony commenced, the grand procession welcoming the Acharyas into the mandala inspired profound reverence among the congregation. When the Seven-Line Prayer to Guru Padmasambhava echoed throughout the hall, many devotees were moved to tears, sincerely invoking Guru Rinpoche's compassionate blessings.
During the fire offering (Homa), presided over by Khenpo Rinchen while the Shingon Acharyas chanted the Sutra of the Principle of Bliss (Rishukyō), an extraordinary auspicious sign appeared. After Khenpo Rinchen performed the sacred mudrās, made ritual offerings, and circumambulated the Homa altar three times, a gentle rain descended from the sky. This remarkable union of water and fire was regarded as an auspicious omen, and those present deeply felt the inconceivable compassion and blessings of Guru Padmasambhava manifested before them.
As the prayers for the liberation of the departed were chanted, the atmosphere became deeply moving. Many devotees reflected upon the immeasurable kindness of their deceased parents and ancestors, offering heartfelt prayers that all sentient beings may be freed from suffering and attain fortunate rebirth.
Following the ceremony, Khenpo Rinchen exchanged commemorative gifts with the Director General of Kongobu-ji, the Director General of Ninna-ji, the Director of General Affairs of Ninna-ji, and the Chief Priest of Daile-ji Temple. This meaningful exchange symbolized the harmonious unity between the Tibetan Vajrayāna and Japanese Shingon traditions, working together beyond all distinctions to turn the Wheel of the Tathāgata's Dharma for the benefit of countless beings.
The Dharma teachings delivered by the assembled Acharyas were profound and inspiring. Every word penetrated deeply into the hearts of the audience, allowing all present to receive the cleansing wisdom of the Buddhadharma and strengthening their aspiration to cultivate the path and benefit all sentient beings.
The complete success of this Deliverance Dharma Assembly was made possible through the compassionate leadership of Khenpo Rinchen, the wholehearted support of all the Acharyas, and the dedicated efforts of countless devotees, volunteers, and Dharma protectors. United in harmony, they collectively manifested the Buddha's teachings of wisdom, compassion, and selfless service, enabling the true Dharma to flourish for the benefit of all beings.
May the boundless merits generated by this sacred assembly be dedicated to all sentient beings throughout the Dharma Realm. May all be liberated from suffering, attain enlightenment together, may the Buddha Dharma shine ever more brightly and endure for generations to come, and may peace, harmony, and prosperity prevail throughout the world.
