Last week, our doctors (Dr Paul Chiam and Dr Lim Choon Pin) performed a Tricuspid Valve Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (T-TEER) using the Edwards PASCAL device. This is a minimally invasive (keyhole) procedure to repair the tricuspid valve.

Our patient, an elderly and frail individual with severe tricuspid valve regurgitation, had a significant reduction in valve leakage following the procedure. For selected patients, a successful minimally invasive treatment can mean a better quality of life, fewer hospitalisations, and a much quicker recovery compared to open-heart surgery.

These procedures require extensive preparation, meticulous planning, and close teamwork. We are grateful to our multidisciplinary team and our industry partners for their expertise, dedication, and support.

Every new procedure we introduce expands the treatment options we can offer, helping us care for more patients who may previously have had limited treatment options.

We look forward to continuing to advance structural heart (heart valve) therapies and bringing more innovative treatment options to our patients.

Our doctors (Dr Paul Chiam and Dr Lim Choon Pin) at The Heart and Vascular Centre were privileged to have recently performed minimally invasive TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve implantation) using the JenaValve Trilogy™ Transcatheter Heart Valve in four patients with severe native aortic regurgitation (leakage) over two days. All four procedures were completed successfully, and the patients were discharged after a two-night hospital stay.

The Trilogy valve has achieved CE mark approval, and earlier this year, also received U.S. FDA approval as the first transcatheter heart valve specifically designed for the treatment of severe native aortic regurgitation in selected patients at increased surgical-risk. To our knowledge, these procedures represent the second clinical use of the JenaValve Trilogy™ at a centre in Southeast Asia, following the National Heart Centre Singapore.

For many years, open-heart surgery has been the standard treatment for severe aortic regurgitation. Current TAVI valves are designed for severe Aortic Stenosis (narrowing). For patients with severe aortic regurgitation (leakage), the current TAVI valves are not suitable as there is a significant risk of TAVI valve dislodgement or migration. The JenaValve is designed to be implanted securely and safely in patients with severe aortic regurgitation. It is encouraging to see new technologies providing an additional minimally invasive treatment option for selected patients who may not be ideal candidates for surgery.

These procedures are only possible because of teamwork. Our heartfelt thanks to our cardiac surgeon, cardiac anaesthetist, nurses, cardiac technologists, radiographers and the JenaValve team for their expertise, dedication and collaboration.

We are pleased to share that Dr Paul Chiam performed a TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) procedure at the newly opened Hybrid Operating Theatre at Gleneagles Hospital in April 2026.

TAVI is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat severe aortic valve narrowing. It uses a tube (catheter) instead of open-heart surgery, allowing faster recovery, especially in higher-risk or older patients.

Pushing the boundaries @ The Heart And Vascular Centre

Our cardiologists, Dr Paul Chiam and Dr Lim Choon Pin, successfully performed one of Singapore’s first few cases of minimally invasive BASILICA procedures with TAVI. We are grateful for the expert proctoring of Dr Karl P**n from Brisbane and the support of our team, including Dr Sivathasan (cardiac surgeon), Dr Lim Yean Teng (cardiologist), and nurses/cardiac techs/radiographers of Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital. Using advanced 3D echocardiography integrated with fluoroscopy, the procedure was completed safely and successfully, and the patient was discharged yesterday.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation / replacement (TAVI/TAVR) is a well-established therapy for aortic valve disease, but certain patients remain unsuitable due to anatomical constraints, such as low coronary (heart) artery heights. The technically-challenging BASILICA procedure uses an electrified guidewire to precisely split a targeted aortic valve leaflet, creating space and preventing coronary artery obstruction during TAVI.

Yesterday 29 October 2025 was World Stroke Day.

*𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 - 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱

Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a dangerous, potentially fatal condition caused by blood clots blocking the arteries of the lungs. A woman in her 40s presented to Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital with calf pain, breathlessness, and fainting spells. She was quickly diagnosed with severe PE and deep vein thrombosis. Our dedicated team at The Heart and Vascular Centre, led by Drs Paul Chiam and Lim Choon Pin performed a 2-hour emergency pulmonary thrombectomy using the Inari FlowTriever system. Through a tiny groin incision, we successfully removed large clots from her lungs, rapidly improving her oxygen levels and blood pressure.

We take great pride in being able to offer life-saving minimally invasive treatments that make a real difference. She recovered well and walked out of the hospital just 4 days later.
