Think anaesthesia simply means "going to sleep" before surgery?

More than that, anaesthesia helps prevent pain and keeps patients comfortable during surgery, allowing the medical team to perform procedures safely. An anaesthetist's role spans three stages: before surgery, when they review the patient's medical history to plan the anaesthetic approach; during surgery, when they closely monitor the patient's vital signs to ensure safety; and after surgery, when they ensure pain is well controlled as vital signs return to normal.

Speaking to CNA about how anaesthetists calibrate medicines' levels carefully, CGH anaesthesia, pain, perioperative and critical care medicine consultant Dr Joanne Yeo shared, "Larger doses of drugs have more side effects on circulation and breathing, while smaller doses risk pain and awareness."

Happy to have welcomed young volunteers from Suncare SG to last weekend as part of the Shine @ North East programme with North East Community Development Council, to share about healthcare and how they can play a part in keeping our community healthy. 💙

Alongside our CGH staff volunteers, the young volunteers learnt about health topics impacting older adults such as nutrition, common chronic conditions and fall risks, and picked up practical skills such as conducting blood pressure monitoring. They also got a behind-the-scenes tour of our home campus, finding out more about the different roles our care team plays in caring for our patients and community.

We look forward to seeing our care team and these young advocates connect across generations to share what they have learnt and make a difference in the community — together.
