During examination periods, tension can spread through a family.

Students may become irritable or withdrawn. Parents may become more anxious and controlling. Conversations can turn into arguments about revision, devices, tuition or results.

Before responding, pause and ask:

Am I reacting to what happened, or to my own fear about what may happen?

Families do not need to remove every disagreement. They can learn to communicate without allowing anxiety to lead every conversation.

Counselling can support individuals who feel overwhelmed by family expectations or conflict.

Perfectionism is often praised because it can look like discipline, high standards and responsibility.

Underneath it, however, there may be a fear of criticism, rejection, failure or not being good enough.

You may repeatedly redo your work, avoid starting unless you can do something perfectly or feel unable to appreciate what you have achieved.

High standards can support growth. Perfectionism can make growth feel unsafe.

Counselling can help you examine the beliefs driving relentless pressure and develop a healthier relationship with achievement.

For Secondary 1 to 3 students, weighted assessments may feel less significant than major examinations to adults, but the stress can still be very real.

Students may worry about disappointing their parents, falling behind their classmates or being placed into an academic path they did not expect.

Avoid dismissing their concerns with “It is only a small test.”

Listen first. Help them identify what they can control. Remind them that one assessment does not define their future.

Counselling support is available for students experiencing persistent academic anxiety.

Returning to routine can feel difficult

Returning to school, work or revision after a break can feel heavier than expected.

Your mind may resist restarting. You may feel distracted, unmotivated or anxious about everything waiting for you.

Rather than demanding immediate maximum productivity, begin with one manageable action.

Open the document. Review one section. Reply to one message. Prepare what you need for tomorrow.

Progress often begins before motivation arrives.

Counselling can help when stress, anxiety or low mood repeatedly interferes with daily functioning.

After a busy period or major celebration, the sudden quiet can feel unfamiliar.

You may notice tiredness that you had been pushing aside, emotions that were temporarily distracted or worries about returning to your usual responsibilities.

You do not need to fill every moment with activity.

Use today to reconnect with what your mind and body may be asking for. Rest, movement, quiet reflection and meaningful conversation can all be forms of recovery.

When slowing down brings difficult feelings to the surface, counselling can provide a safe place to process them.

Our strength as a nation is not only reflected in how far we have progressed. It is also reflected in how we care for one another.

Behind every achievement are people navigating stress, uncertainty, grief, family responsibilities, work pressures and personal struggles that may not be visible.

This National Day, let us make room for compassion.

Check in on someone. Listen without rushing to solve their problem. Remind them that seeking support is a responsible and courageous step.

Happy National Day from The Lion Mind.

As Singapore prepares to celebrate National Day, we may find ourselves reflecting on what home means.

Home can be a place, a relationship, a memory or a sense of emotional safety. For some, the idea of home may also bring complicated feelings, including loneliness, grief or disconnection.

There is no single correct way to feel during a national celebration.

Whatever comes up for you, your experience deserves space and understanding.

Counselling can help you explore emotions that may be difficult to express elsewhere.

You do not need to wait until you can explain everything perfectly before asking for help.

Sometimes, the most honest starting point is simply:

“I am not coping.”
“I feel overwhelmed.”
“I do not know what to do next.”
“I need someone to listen.”

Reaching out does not make you weak or burdensome. It means you have recognised that something needs attention.

Counselling gives you a confidential place to begin, even when you do not yet have the right words.

Studying late into the night may feel productive, but an exhausted mind can find it harder to concentrate, retain information and regulate emotions.

Preparation is not only about how many hours you spend studying. It also includes eating regularly, sleeping adequately and allowing your mind time to recover.

One more chapter at 1.00 am may not always be more helpful than getting the rest you need.

When worry repeatedly interferes with sleep, counselling can help you understand and manage the thoughts keeping you awake.

Parents often want to motivate their children during examination season. However, repeated reminders, comparisons and questions about revision may unintentionally increase anxiety.

Instead of asking only, “How much have you studied?”, consider asking:

“How are you coping?”
“What feels most difficult right now?”
“What kind of support would help?”

A child who feels emotionally safe is more likely to communicate honestly about what is happening.

Counselling can support young people and adults who are struggling with academic or family-related stress.
