People often use the term “OCD” casually to describe being neat, organised, or particular about routines. But for someone living with obsessive-compulsive disorder, intrusive thoughts and repeated behaviours can become exhausting, distressing, and difficult to control, even when they know those fears may not be rational.

In this article, Psychiatrist Dr Lim Wei Shyan explains what OCD really is and why the condition is often misunderstood or overlooked. The good news is that with proper support and treatment, many people with OCD are able to manage their symptoms better and gradually regain a greater sense of control and confidence.

Understanding OCD is an important step toward reducing stigma and encouraging early support. Share this with someone who may find it helpful, and read the full article via 🔗 https://mtalvernia.sg/news/ask-the-experts-when-the-mind-wont-let-go/ to learn more.

Live Replay 🎥 “Can alcohol affect my kidney health?”

After a night out, it may seem strange to discover changes to your urine habits. Urologists Dr Joe Lee and Dr Tricia Kuo (UROHEALTH MEDICAL CLINIC) unpack how alcohol interacts with your bladder and kidneys to affect their function and hence urine production.

While occasional changes may not be alarming, if you notice unusual urinary patterns after drinking, or symptoms that continue beyond the occasional night out, it may be worth getting it reviewed.

Double the joy this Mother’s Day! Let's welcome babies Eldon and Elsa 💙💖

Born just a minute apart on Mother’s Day, these beautiful fraternal twins made a memorable entrance into the arms of their loving parents, Daddy Ivan Chua, 38, and Mummy Le Thi My Duc, 36.

The couple first discovered they were expecting twins during a routine ultrasound scan in the second month of pregnancy. A joyful surprise that made the journey all the more special. As the first twins in the family, and with the blessing of welcoming both a son and a daughter, their excitement only grew with each passing day.

Although their estimated due date was 4 June, babies Eldon and Elsa had plans of their own, arriving early this morning and turning Mother’s Day into a celebration their family will never forget.

For Daddy Ivan, the moment Dr Henry Cheng confirmed that both mummy and the twins were safe brought an overwhelming sense of relief and gratitude, a perfect beginning to this new chapter as a family of four.

To mark the special occasion, our Director of Nursing, Ms Shirley Tay, presented the family with thoughtful gifts generously sponsored by our partners.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our generous sponsors for helping make this Mother’s Day even more meaningful for our families. 💐

Baby Karys Lim decided to arrive early and share the spotlight with her mummy by making her debut on Mother’s Day at 0411hrs on 10 May 2026. 💐👶

Mummy Carmen was surprised when contractions began just after midnight on Mother's Day when her estimated due date was supposed to be 13 May. She was promptly admitted to Mount Alvernia Hospital while only 3cm dilated. Following 4 hours of labour, baby Karys made her grand entrance into the world, delivered by Dr Ben Choey.

For Carmen, 35, and Kelvin, 37, this special moment marks another beautiful chapter in a love story that began in their secondary school days in Malaysia. Years later, life brought them both to Singapore, where friendship blossomed into love as they navigated adulthood together.

Carmen fondly reflected on her pregnancy journey, sharing how different this experience was compared to when she was expecting her first child, Cayson, who turns 6 this August and was also born at Mount Alvernia Hospital. Unlike her first pregnancy, baby Karys brought four months of morning sickness, leading Carmen to suspect early on that she might be having a girl.

“We wish for our daughter to be healthy and happy. Kor Kor will love her so much,” Mummy Carmen shared.

To make the occasion even more memorable, our Director of Nursing, Ms Shirley Tay, presented gifts from our generous sponsors. A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors for helping make this Mother’s Day celebration extra special. 💖

Live Replay 🎥 “Can cranberry juice or supplements really help with UTIs?”

Sounds like a simple, natural fix - but does cranberry really help when it comes to urinary health?

Our Urologists Dr Tricia Kuo (UROHEALTH MEDICAL CLINIC) and Dr Joe Lee explain where cranberry juice or supplements may be helpful, and more importantly, where they are not. While it can play a role in reducing the risk of future infections for those who are prone, it is not a substitute for proper treatment when an infection is already present. If you have experienced recurring UTIs or are unsure how to manage symptoms, consider seeking proper assessment instead of self-medicating.

Have you tried cranberry for urinary health before?

Hip pain is often brushed off as part of ageing: something to live with, rather than something to look into. But when simple movements like walking, climbing stairs or getting out of a chair start to feel harder, it may be a sign that the joint is more seriously affected than it seems.

In this article, Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon Dr Hitendra K Doshi explains when hip replacement may be considered - from fractures after a fall to long-standing conditions like osteoarthritis - and what recovery involves. With the right treatment and support, many patients are able to regain strength and confidence, and even walk independently again in a few weeks.

If hip discomfort has been limiting your daily activities, do not hesitate to get it assessed. Share this with someone who might need to hear it, and read the full article at 🔗 https://mtalvernia.sg/news/ask-the-experts-hip-trouble-in-the-elderly/ to learn more.

Live Replay 📹 “Is it safe for children to use UV protection?”

Many parents wonder if sunscreen is safe for young children, or worry that avoiding the sun might affect their vitamin D levels.

As Dr Shanna shares, sun protection can be safely used for children based on the instructions detailed on the product labels. However, beyond sunscreen, simple habits like avoiding peak sun hours and planning outdoor activities earlier in the day can go a long way in protecting your child’s skin. For vitamin D, just a short period of sun exposure each day is often sufficient. ☀️

If you are unsure how to balance sun safety and your child’s health, it may be helpful to speak with a doctor for personalised guidance.

Live Replay 📹 “Will my child outgrow eczema?”

It is one of the most common questions parents ask when eczema first appears: Is this something temporary, or something we have to manage for years to come?

While eczema can look concerning in the early stages, especially in babies and young children, the longer-term outlook may be more reassuring than expected. As Dr Shanna shares, when eczema begins early in life, many children do see improvement as they grow older. If you are navigating eczema with your child and unsure what to expect, it can be helpful to speak with a dermatologist to have a clearer understanding of how it may evolve over time.
