In Art in Action, our regular series, we shine a light on the incredible credentialed art therapists we collaborate with at The Red Pencil (Singapore)!

Jolene Chiang is a Registered Art Psychotherapist and certified Thanatologist (grief specialist) who works closely with people navigating grief, loss, life transitions, and complex trauma β€” the kinds of experiences that quietly reshape who we are, how we relate to others, and how we see the world.

Her approach blends brain science, art psychotherapy, and memory-based techniques, especially for the moments where words just aren't enough. She previously worked full-time at Singapore's first national grief therapy centre, and today splits her time between a psychiatric hospital and her independent practice, where she also trains and supervises social service professionals in arts-based methods. 🎨

"When someone allows their pain to be seen, witnessed and transformed – they can feel empowered to respond in adaptive ways, instead of letting the past dictate their present situations – this has been inspiring."

On September 5, we're partnering with Artualize Art Gallery and artist Wee Ping Chun to run a workshop that takes your appreciation of art into something of your own.

Spend time with the pieces on show, then take a moment before responding to what struck you, working in the same materials Chun had - Chinese ink, watercolour, acrylic, or rice paper.

A credentialed art therapist eases the room into the session, stays present while everyone works, and closes with a small shared exhibition of what came out of the afternoon, plus space to talk about it if you want to. Everyone gets a Mindful Response Kit at the start: a clipboard, pencil, and a few paper prompts, in case you need somewhere to begin.

Grief doesn't follow a timeline. Some days it's quiet, other days it catches you off guard β€” especially when you've spent so much of yourself caring for someone else.

Journey On is The Red Pencil (Singapore)'s signature art therapy programme created specially for grieving caregivers. We're opening our doors for two One-Time Introductory Workshops! No art experience needed, no pressure to "get it right." Just a safe space to process, express, and be met with compassion.

15 years of colour, care and community β€” what a milestone! πŸŽ‰

Our 15th Anniversary Community Celebration was a joyous, heartfelt affair, bringing together more than 250 participants, including seniors, families with young children, our beneficiaries, partners and friends, for a morning of art, music and connection.

We were deeply honoured to welcome our Patron and Guest of Honour, Minister for National Development Mr Chee Hong Tat 徐芳达 , who joined us for a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion, followed by a mass art-making activity symbolising our 15-year journey. We were also glad to have Mr Melvin Yong ζ¨η›Šθ΄’ , Member of Parliament for Radin Mas, join us as one of our invited guests. Participants also enjoyed interactive art and music therapy stations, a festive carnival atmosphere, and free snacks and beverages for all. A big thank you too to our Board Chairman Mr Anthony Ang and our Board of Directors for their steady support throughout this journey. ☺️

This celebration would not have been possible without generous hands. Our heartfelt thanks to:

● Ms Chew Soo Wei, our wonderful emcee, who gave her time pro bono and brought incredible energy, wit and warmth to the stage. She is a true friend of the social services sector!
● The Mill International, for sponsoring their sturdy Splash chairs, crafted from recycled carpet polypropylene pellets. Thank you for championing sustainability with us!
● Project Obscura Project Obscura , for their volunteer photographers and the beautiful photos you see here
● Tentage Rental Singapore , our furniture and logistics partner, for their generous donation back to our charity
● PK Events, for kindly supporting us with storage solutions for our big display boards
● ALL our partners, active ageing centres, nursing homes, fellow non-profits and members of the public who joined the celebration
● Our staff, interns and volunteers, who gave their time to make this a truly united effort

Here's to many more years of hope, transformation and community. ❀️
