Akio Yoshida, president of AEON Malls, stood before the nation this morning and bowed.

Hours earlier, an explosion had torn through his company's Kumamoto mall — three workers dead, one critical, three still missing.

He didn't send a spokesperson. He didn't release a statement through lawyers.

He faced the cameras himself, laid out every number, and apologized.

3,000 customers were inside when the earthquake hit. All of them got out.

The workers who died were the ones still helping close down the building when the suspected gas explosion hit.

Yoshida also confirmed the company is investigating whether its own emergency gas shut-off systems failed.

In Japan, when something goes wrong on your watch, you stand up and own it — publicly, personally, immediately.

It doesn't bring anyone back. But it's accountability you rarely see anywhere else.

Our thoughts are with the victims' families and the rescuers still searching.
